My 933 QS2K2 is looking for a speed bump. What is the collective wisdom about getting a single 1.7Ghz upgrade? Vs maybe a 1.2 or 1.4?

Anyone planning on getting the 1.7 anytime soon and if so..what were your reasons/justifications for doing so?

At $800 for a dual 1.7Ghz vs $1300 for a 1.6 G5 iMac..while keeping my investment in hardware and monitors...this seems like a no brainer...or is my math out of whack?

Opinions?

Well with the imac you are getting a whole new computer, with upgraded everything, and a warranty on everything, not to mention the screen on the imac is probably half its value.

Other deciding factors would be whether you wanted to upgrade said iMac in the future, and the value of your current setup.

Im going to be pulling the trigger on the Dual 1.7 I think. I have a lot invested into this quicksilver, and I love the little guy. I feel like I can get another 2-3 years out of it with the dual 1.7, and thats worth the money to me.

Sine,

Clue: Voiding your warranty is listed as an item to the Mod forum. Adding a cpu upgrade VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY.

So next time I post about upgrades where upgrade discussions belong, you going to move that post too? WTF????

What decision tree do you use to make your decisions becasue THIS post was posted in the right place. GO LOOK at earlier discussions there.

I'm with Weezer. This looks like a good "bang for the buck" type thing that will keep my QS working and up to date.

I'll wait till late december or sometime in January to make any decision about which upgrade card to buy. It will be either the dual 1.6Ghz (Rated to 1.73Ghz) from Giga, either that or if PowerLogix can 1-up them, I'll go with PL, but that really is to be determined. but I will buy a dual processor upgrade for my Quicksilver (single 867) and I'll also be getting a Radeon 9800 Pro to replace my GeForce 4 MX.

then in 4 (five?) more years when I graduate I'll get the ADC student discount and cash that in on a top-of-the-line PowerMac which will have to do me for a bare minimum of five years after that.

So Lateralus and Eug Wanker and Weezer et al,

Now that the dust is clearing...

1. Does the Dual 1.7 make sense or should I go for a slower clocked dual upgrade?

2. If so, which one do you recommend?

I do light Halo and Call of Duty. I DO crunch Dnet OGR 24/7 so I'm looking for most bang for distributed buck.

Thanks in advance for whatever advice you give.

Well, I'd say the Dual 1.73s are still the way to go, absolutely. The larger cache of the slower clocked 7455/7457 upgrades will only put them on the same playing field as the 1.73s some of the time. Whereas the raw clock speed advantage of these 7447As will give them the advantage nearly all of the time.

Gaming is probably the one exception to this, as game engines do a lot of caching. So if your only concern is gaming, I'd say thinking about the lower clocked and cheaper 745x upgrades wouldn't be a bad idear.

But again, all around, the 7447As will have the advantage, especially in general use such as Finder browsing and such.

And as for OGR: DNETC's clients are *massively* optimized for AltiVec, which you probably know if you're running any of their projects. AltiVec it self is pretty much clock speed dependant, so it's a no contest in favor of the 7447As.

Far out. That's all I needed to know. I'm no gamer and Distributed is my 24/7, along with iMovie, so that's that

I am sooo looking forward to a Dual 1.7Ghz in a few weeks

I'll post before and after Dnet OGR stubs/sec and any other DC benchies I can think of.

Thanks man

I will almost certainly be getting a dual 1.6Ghz 7447A upgrade (and will run it hopefully at 1.86... but we'll see. I'm not counting on it.

anyway, if anyone gets either a single or a dual soon I'd be interested in seeing some before/after tests like...

Unreal Tournament 2004
HALO
Mathematica 5
iTunes CD encode time
Cinebench 2003
etc.

just some ideas if you wish to preform tests but want some ideas on what to run besides the obligatory XBench. .

Fill us in when it arrives. I'm really wondering about spending the extra hundred for the 1.6 over the 1.42.

I'll definitely post some reports. specifically if I can get it to run reliably at 1.86Ghz

but I'm ordering the 1.6 to be on the safe side, know what I'm saying?

but yeah, I'll definitely post some stuff.

I made up my mind. Going with the Giga Dual 1.7Ghz in mid-January.

For 2/3 the cost of an iMac, I get TWICE the computer AND don't get an extra LCD which I don't need AND retain the existing hardware I didn't need to upgrade.
