This is the cable of my imac dv the one end that looks like scsi connects to the motherboard and the other one that looks like scsi connects to the cd rom drive, and ide to the hd. unfortunately I want to install linux and my internal cdrom drive died for the second time and my external one has issues with the linux installer. If you havnt guessed it by know I am trying to add an extra ide connector to that cable will it work if just clip it on to the existing ide? these cables are hard to find btw I all-ready added extra connectors to power supply.

The custom cable in those iMacs uses the extra wires to carry power to the optical drive.

I can't exactly figure out what your question is. If you want to use a replacement slot-loading notebook-style drive, just get it. The little board that's attached to the drive gets moved to the new drive.

Are you trying to use a NOTEBOOK optical drive, or a DESKTOP optical drive in the iMac? That model iMac is supposed to use notebook optical drives, and only those will fit.

Well, a splitter from the 40-pin connector for the hard drive to two such connectors should do the trick -- if such an adapter exists. Then just leave the 50-pin connector that is normally for the optical drive empty.
