So I followed this guide to overclock my 733mhz DA to 867mhz. It worked fine at first, so I took it back out to apply arctic silver. Popped it back in, dosen't boot, stuck on the loading screen. I shutdown, repower on, works fine! I look at the system profile, it's rated at 800mhz now!

The weird thing is that I put that same OCed CPU into another G4, it shows up at 867mhz

Do I need to reset something? BIOS? (i'm a Mac noob )

thanks!

If your a mac newb why in all earthly creation would u try to overclock and for minimal gain too, ooh 134MHz and a headache, I hate to be a pain but ur lucky enough that the G4 runs and u did gain 77MHz which is a noticible improvment(mmmm sarcasm) OK try resetting the PRAM or CMOS

It's pretty simple--sounds like you need to resolder the one resistor that you moved and make sure it's making a solid connection. If you had removed that one resistor (and not added it to the "0" position), then you would have just an 800 MHz CPU. You would also get the 800 MHz setting if that same resistor wasn't making good solder contact at position "0". The reason for the erratic, random behavior is that the resistor is making contact sometimes but not other times. If it loses contact during a boot, then the machine hangs on a grey screen.

There's nothing wrong with being a newbie--we've all been there at one time. The fact that Joony read first, then modified his hardware, should vindicate him from criticism. Besides, for a "newbie", he's obviously done his homework.

The only way to graduate from newbie to novice is to take that scary first step... Other's may sit by humbly in their urine-soaked pants, typing away happily at their wussified indigo iMac...
