MiniClassic or MiniPlus...who/which is gonna be first!?
If I didn't just get myself an iBook for xmas I would've done a MiniPlus. Hell, I'll donate my Plus if someone wants to do it. It would be even cooler if you upgraded (heh) to a 10" LCD like this one (first one I found, not affiliated - couldn't find a suitable 9")...that's what I would've done.
I almost wish I hadn't gotten the iBook, oh well.

The Classic was the first sub-$1000 Mac so sticking the first sub-$500 Mac into its case would be fitting (no-pun). You'd probably run over the Classic's original price unless you've got connections but it would still be cool.
I just wish I had the spare change (I could probably borrow it but..). You'd surely get slashdotted and could probably ebay it for a small profit.

Doesn't OS X require at least 1024x768 resolution, though? That LCD you linked only goes up to 800x600.
Hmm... There's got to be a way to do this. I wish I hadn't thrown out my Mac Plus last summer!

OS X doesn't require 1024x768 and over, but a lot of the Apple iApps like iMovie etc don't fit on a smaller screen like 800x600. The clamshell iBooks can have OS X installed, but not all of the iApps run on its screen.

LOL, if OS X requires 1024x768, then how have I been able to run it on my iBook all of these years? Haha, not trying to give you a hard time, but as has been pointed out by ajprice OS X does indeed run at 800x600. Now 800x600 on a 10" screen would be really painful, but OS X would still run.

Not really, as my iBook runs 1024x768 on a 12" screen. The pixels would probally be bigger on the 10". I'd love to do this, but I'm a little short on cash right now. How about putting the mini in an IIe case?

Ouch!
Leave it alone, guys, good grief.
I thought wrong, it was pointed out, end of story. I didn't really think it needed to be laughed at more than once.
Now I know that it does run at 800x600. I really only needed to be told that once (despite my ADD...).
that said, as was also pointed out by ajprice, it would be tough to really USE OS X at that small resolution, as many applications (not just from Apple but from many software makers) DO require 1024x768. So the point is still (mostly) valid.
And I agree that 800x600 on a 10" screen wouldn't be too bad. I've been running 1024x768 on my iBook's 12" screen for almost four years now. As it turns out, the size of the pixels would actually be larger on the 10" screen at 800x600 (10/800=0.0125" width per pixel; 12.1/1024=0.0118" per pixel). Not a significant difference, but at least it wouldn't be quite as painful as the resolution I've been using for so long.
So, in the end, I would love to see this done.
Oh, and Big Mac, you're kinda (pointlessly) mean.
Marcus

That monitor was the first of its size (10" and square) that I found and I'm stuck on dialup so if someone could hunt down a better screen that would be cool.
Curious, can the Mini be forced to power 2 screens? That would be nice, especially if we can't find something that does 1024x768. Then you could put iTunes on the 10" and run everything else on something bigger.
Or...it has to be said ...stick 2 Mini's in the Classic!

Why not? This cable would make it physically possible, and the rest would need to be done in software, like the iBook hack.

I think I'll attempt this when I finally retire the one I'm using now. I have an SE (My first baby. I might do it to her. But hell, I can't . So instead I'll do it to the dead Classic II in the basement.. OR the Plus. I dunno. BUT, first I'd have to find a CRT capable of 800+ that fits. I'd rather not have to saw out the screen space to put an LCD in there.
It would be fine as an iTunes server. Or better yet, a web server.

I know the Color Classic display can be hacked to support 800x600. The Classic may allow this too.

Nope. Nada. 0% correct. Can't be done. Impossible. Um... and other synonyms.
Not only that, but even if it could, the screen cannot be used in another computer.

Silly, I was talking about the Classic! NOT the Color Classic! The Classic's BW screen cannot be upgraded to 800x600. The Classic! Sorry if I was not clearer.

Impossible.
Not for the Classic's screen. No hack now way and besides, why would you want to use a BW screen on OS X?
Believe me, I used to frequent AF all the time. I've seen these questions come and go many many times.

OK, I consider the matter dead. In any case, gutting (and replacing the display) would be the best option.

I agree. The question is where to find a suitable display. I'm anal about looks so an LCD won't do. It'd have to be a CRT of the same size and shape. Or at least close.

This 10" CRT supports XGA resolution! Here are some more XGA 10" CRT's.

Nice, but will those all fit? Especially the width. The border looks a bit thick. I would hope that's just the frame with empty space.

One could remove the case and mount the crt in the Classic's.

I know that, but will the innards still fit? That's the question. It looks like there's too much of a "Frame" there . I'm hoping it's just empty space. Someone bought one of those yet wanna take 'er apart?
If I'm sure it'll fit, I'll buy it when the time comes hands down.

You got my attention with that 10" LCD... now if only it could do 1024*768, had a USB connection for touch-screen and was half that price. One can only dream.
I think such a tiny LCD would beautifully compliment the Mini, combined with touch screen, Creature II speakers and iTunes you have the perfect in house (and, of course, in car) music system.
If you want to put a screen in the classic you would probably have to mount a TFT - the space is not the only issue... I am not sure how much heat those iddy biddy CRTs generate, but their bigger brothers are toasty. $500 odd is an awful lot of cash to lay down on a project like this though.
I want a 10" LCD now! Grr.

There was some thread (I think it was here) about someone who modded an old classic, using a new touchscreen and running Panther.

What I would worry about is depth with those CRTs - the first one is 9.5 inches. I just rough-measured my Plus and you're looking at about 9 inches. Since you'd have to cut out the bezel to fit the 10" screen anyway you might get another .5"...but it'll be close.
Heat shouldn't be an issue, if nothing else you "zone" it and add another fan or three. You should have plenty of space to separate the mini's components too.
That said, a 10" LCD makes more sense anyway (size, weight, heat and power advantages). What I wonder is if you were serious about doing it if you couldn't get a discount on the screen - just thank the vendor and toss up a couple links. The PC wedged in a Mini made the rounds and it plain sucked...

Jeff Strong and his wunderputer!
Performa 640(PPC-601)/LC040/52mb/(8.6)/10.3gigs Win95b/586dx2/100mhz/32mb, with only
1 Zoom 56k modem, 16" Apple monitor, 12 year old Stylewriter II printer, floppy, cd, kybrd, & scanner!
I moved "up" to an Apple beige G3 with a G4/500 zif chip o/c to 550mhz, running Mac OS X 10.1 with the same 16" Apple monitor now using 6mb vram, 768mb sdram ram, a 30 gig EIDE drive, another keyboard, same zoom 56k, a Yamaha SCSI CDRW 6/4/16, floppy, and future EIDE DVD, or.............transitioning a lot of this into a Powermac 9600!
Bill Gates "forced" me to buy one of his 'pirated' WindowsXP commodity-based PC's from Dell 'new' for $400, 2.8ghz (slower than G4/550), 17", CDRW, 512mb, DVD, and same OLD Zoom 56k!

This is the ibook model that is like 1 line of text, and if you use more than 2 words you have to scroll to view it? ;-)

Cool, in this case I don't mind being beat. Looks like the Mini and SE go well together too.
A Classic would still be better just for the historical value, first sub-$500 in the first sub-$1000. Maybe it's just me though.

If you were really determined, I'm sure you could find a way to get a 'lens' to put over the LCD and maintain the CRT look.
