it would require cutting away part of the case itself and a lot of work beyond that...

I'm not sure how, but being a quicksilver owner and tinkering around with the idea quite a bit, it would not be worth the destruction of the case unless you were damn good at doing it.

That was a sweet mod. It was at xlr8yourmac.com. They also had one with a BW G3 with two opticals and a G4 Sawtooth as well. It did require cutting away the shelf under the zip. The two drives were attached to each other with small strips of metal to their mounting screws. I forgot how it was supported in the case though.

You did a lousy job then. All I did was search "dual optical" and there it was.

There have been numerous threads on xlr8yourmac.com (as already suggested), and you can also go here: http://forums.themacaddress.com/index.php

I've always wondered why someone hasn't come out with a kit that uses a slot loading laptop drive. Seems as though you could get it to fit without any hacking and could make a nice bezel to complete the look.

Because the ZIP slot on the drive cage is too narrow...only accommodates 3.5" drives, and even a slot-loading optical would need a 5.25"

It isn't the height that's a problem. Actually, nothing is really the problem, they just put in the wrong size cage. With some cutting shears and soda cans you can mount a standard optical drive there just fine.

it's not the cage, it's the actual case itself. the front opening will NOT accomodate an optical drive in the lower bay. I'm staring straight at it right now.

Yes it will. I have a quicksilver also. With a dremel it'll work just fine.

I'm going to dremel that whole section out and install one of these:

They're cool, and cheap.

Yes, the opening on the front of the inner metal case won't allow for a disk much bigger than a zip disk, so you'll have to dremel it a bit.. see, the QS is quite a bit different than the DA case even if they look the same from the outside

-- that means the drive bays themselves aren't on a 'cage' that can come out, rather the brackets mount to the front/other parts of the case and the front is stationary.. you would have to dremel the metal panel.. though not the plastic one

It'd be neat if someone could take that zip bay blank and hinge it to make a nifty stealth drive setup while they're at it.. kudos to anyone who does this.
Aloha
