ever since replacing the 800 MHz G4/no L3 cache in my Quicksilver 2002 with a Powerlogix 800 MHz/2 MB L3 cache (cut me some slack, this was a while ago) my computer has not been able to wake from sleep or go to sleep properly.

what happens when i put it to sleep is that the display powers down but the hard drives don't. trying to wake it is unsuccessful at this point, and a hard reset via holding down the power key is necessary.

do any of you posters have a replacement processor card and/or this problem? any solutions? when i contacted powerlogix about this issue way back when they basically said it was apple's own problem, and apple of course wanted nothing to do with it since the processor card was third party.

Powerlogix lied, but what else is new? Yet another instance of horrible customer service from that stupid company. Mike Breeden of XLR8YourMac.com mentions this wake-from-sleep issue several times in his G4 upgrade reviews and it's not just found in PowerLogix cards. The problem, if I recall, is these upgrade manufacturers overclocking the cards to a multiplier too high for the cache. Giga Designs fixed this problem by using a 6:1 ratio for their L3 caches on their newer cards, but as far as I know everyone else is still using 5:1.
I know it's not what you wanted to hear but I wouldn't sleep the machine at all. IMO sleep is only benefitial to portables. Though probably negligable, less hard drive spindown means less wear. Also, its annoying waiting for the hard drives to spin up after waking from sleep... which makes the whole system pause for ~5 seconds after I click an icon or something.

thanks for the reply. i came to the same conclusion, and haven't put my machine to sleep since discovering this problem about two years ago. on the other hand, i can't sleep with my machine awake, so i shut it down every night, and start it up every day as i pass by it on the way to the shower.

I have a dual 1.33 ghz g4 upgrade card... not sure what brand... but it has zero sleep problems. Is there a way to check what brand it is? I pulled off the heatsink and could find no manufacturer marking....

It'll be either PowerLogix or GigaDesigns.

If it has a copper heatsink, it's a GigaDesigns.

i dug up the old email exchange:

To whom it may concern-

I have read about wake-from-sleep issues with Powerlogix cards and G4 Cubes in the past few months. However, I am uncertain as to whether they have been resolved, and whether they existed for G4 towers. My question: Are there any issues with waking from sleep (ie, the computer doesn't wake up) using OS X 10.2.4 and Quicksilver 2002 towers? My purchasing decision hinges on this answer.

Thanks in advance for your reply.
[my name]

the sleep issue is an Apple issue, we cannot remedy it, only Apple can:

This appears to be a common situation with many Apple machines as well. We have been looking into this, but it appears to be something in the OS or apple firmware and not in the card. If it were in the card, it would seem it would happen everywhere, yet we have tons of people who have no sleep issues.
Go to

and type 'g4 sleep' into the search box.

The simple fact that Apple customers (without upgrade cards) are experiencing the very same issues tells us quite conclusively that this issue is not limited to PowerLogix customers. Sonnet has also experienced this issue in their upgrade cards.
You might keep an eye on Apple's forums as well, there are many posts there relating to this issue.
