I want to take a Mac Mini and put it into a Mac SE case. Im thinking of useing a 9" LCD for the screen. Cut the disk drive opening to take a CD in. Might look into installing speakers and the power brick inside the case with it. My reason for doing this is travel between SC and Tn alot and i dont feel like a laptop. Anyone think this would work? or any reasons it might not work?

Someone already did it. I couldn't find the link, but I believe I saw it in Hardware forums of www.applefritter.com

Woah, I've had this idea myself. I've got an empty SE case just sitting waiting to be used. Just need the mini and a 9" screen. I haven't thought about hacking the case for CD use, mainly because I can't remember the last time I've needed to use a CD (or DVD).
If you know where one might purchase a 9" LCD, let me know.

If you're gonna do it, don't half-ass it like he did. Remove the internal componets of the Mini, mount the Mini's motherboard and other components in the SE case itself, and modify the I/O area at the rear of the SE to accomodate the ports on the Mini's motherboard.
You could just dremel out the I/O area on the SEis case entirely, then measure the spacings between the ports on the Mini's board, create measurements and take them to Lowe's or somewhere and have them cut a piece of plexiglass.
Then, dremel the ports in, spray on a bond-coat primer and then throw on a satin or flat spray paint in a color similar to the SE's case.
Voila.

You read my mind! I was up till 3am thinking about this stuff, even came close to taking apart my SE to see what i could use from it. Anyone got a SE for sale under $50? Now to get a 9in LCD and a Mini.....

What shitty luck. I just threw away my SE last night. And the garbage man just rolled through.
Oh well, she wasn't the purtiest SE on Earth. And IMO, the Color Classic would be a much nicer case to do this with. But, Color Classics are rightously expensive on eBay.

If you're interested I've got an empty SE case I painted black with a gold Apple logo that's currently a MacQuarium. If you want, I could sell you either of these cases and put the acquarium guts in the one you don't want. The SE is black with gold accents, the Classic is a bright orange with black. I've also got an untouched Classic that actually worked until I yanked the fan out of the bottom. I'd be willing to sell any of the three to you. I could rip the guts out of the working classic if you didn't want to pay obscene shipping charges.
Last I checked the working Classic is in great cosmetic condition.
Just let me know what you're willing to pay if you're interested in any of these.

How much would you want for the working classic? Im in Tenn so shipping shouldnt be to harsh. It willl have to wait a few weeks, kinda in between jobs right now so cash is tight.

Just to make sure you know, it doesn't work since I tore the fan out. And did you want it with or without the guts? I'm not sure about shipping for either, I'd have to weigh it first. How about $14 plus shipping? And I promise not to gouge you there, like everyone on eBay does.

Id like it with all the guts. How come it wont work without the fan? What OS is on the HD? Im thinking of salvageing some parts from it for my SE. As soon i get a job settled ill be all over it, so hold on to it for me.
BTW do you have AIM or Yahoo? If so, B11Sentra on AIM and Eightynine240SX on Yahoo.

Well, it will probably work, it just might overheat. I'll try and boot it up tomorrow and see what it's got, I know its RAM is maxed out with the special card, though. Actually, I could probably put the fan back in, I ended up not using it. Like I said, I'll see what I can do tomorrow morning (if I get my calc homework done first!)
BTW, my AIM is "probesRok"
