If I add a pci firewire/usb card to my QuickSilver dp800, can I then access external firewire drives whose capacity exceeds what the machine natively supports? My drive (250GB) works just fine on my PB1.33 but not on the QS. I've checked out several different cards, but the specifications listed don't seem to include this information.

just FYI my QuickSilver 933Mhz can read 250Gb external FW hard drives without any problems via the built-in firewire ports. so in theory yours should as well.

Um, I have the 2001 QS which may (I think) be different. If I plug it in, it sees the drive. In fact it even seemed to initialize it. But, I couldn't dismount the drive. Tiger kept saying that it was in use even though the drive was empty and even did the same thing after a reboot. I just plugged it back into the QS and the problem persists and is even worse than I thought. Opening various image files gives me a message that the files are corrupt, the same files that open just fine on the PB.

i thought external drives were fine, as long as the casing was an up-to-date FW bridge.
i know internally the pre 2002 QS couldn't handle larger drives but externally they were fine.

what make is the hard drive? is your PB running Tiger as well?

Both the case (OWC) and the drive (Seagate 250G) are brand new. Yes, the PB is also running Tiger. The case is described as:

Description: OWC Mercury Elite Pro FireWire Enclosure with Oxford911+ chipset. Supports all IDE/ATA 3.5- Hard drives up to 500GB.

OK. To answer my own question. I added the cheapie Firewire/USB2.0 card ($29) to my QS/2001 and it now sees and works properly with my external firewire drive.

(Drat! I'd decided that if this card didn't work I'd have to rush right over to Apple and pick up a new 2.3PM dualie... )
