The program Graphiccelerator now has support for this card.
But, it IS possible to damage it if you go nuts.

Does Graphiccelerator support the 6800 Ultra that Apple uses in it's BTO G5's or is it just retail cards?
Thanks,
Matthew

You see some 2nd hand at online retailors that are pulls. These are often confused with true retail even though they usually have the OEM in the item title.
Flashed cards may also be confused as retail when ebays sell them as 'brand new'.
any way - flashed, OEM, or 2nd hand... they all use the same rom as far as Graphiccelerator is concerned and can be clocked no problem.

Lateralus: What about the GeForce 4 Titanium? That was available from the Apple Store for quite some time. Although I believe that was made by Apple or something... nVidia doesn't manufacture video cards in large quantities, unlike ATI.

I saw a mac ti4600 in a compusa at one point. Compusa wouldnt sell anything 2nd hand, so an OEM pull is very doubtful - though it did come in OEM whitebox style packaging.
Im thinking those where overstock throm their BTO options that they had to start retailing due to lower than expected orders.

OEM-boxed-for-sale is still OEM. Only reason CompUSA carried them is because Apple considers the 'Apple Store In A Store' as legitimate as 'The Apple Store'.

Ive just started overclocking my Apple sourced Nvidia 6800 Ultra.
The stock speed is Processor: 400 Memory: 550
Ive been running mine happily at 450/550. I have been reading that 450 might be a little high for processor as it draws too much current. It doesnt concern me as I have nothing else in the AGP/PCI bay, but could be problematic if I add more cards.
425 seems to be a generally accepted value in the PC world. I have also read indicaters that incresing the memory access speed will yeild more noticeable improvements, so I am oing to start with 425/575 and move slowly up from there.
The memory speed is a bit strange as DDR3 is supposed to run at 1100. And many of the PC 6800U cards state this as an appropriate running speed while the slower DDR1/2 are stated to run at 550. Is the Apple card limited to use the safer value for less than DDR3? or is there some rule-of-thumb multiplier in effect where 550 is actually 1100? (doubled)
Anyone else on the bleeding edge here with some feedback?
I have also upgraded the fan to a Zalman 700 which is a definite improvement - quieter and cooler.

Retail does not imply packaging, Apple offered these cards as BTO and Retail.
They were the same card, thats all that matters.

the reason people dont push the core above 450mhz is not because of the power draw, but because of the heat/stress on the core. The G5 has AGP pro and a very heafy power supply, any graphics card you throw in there will have ample juice.
the core on the other hand might artifact or burn up (resulting in a very expensive paperweight) if you push it too fast. You core may be able to handle 450mhz or more, but i wouldnt push it much beyond 440mhz without upgrading the cooling. A 10% overclock that still runs artifact free on stock cooling isnt all too common. I'd stick with that unless you want to start risking the longecity of your card.
Darwin is right. Your memory is running at 550mhz DDR, which some people list as 1100mhz (damn marketing...). For a more noticable performance increase, clock you memory up (slowly, for safies sake). Keep note on the card's temperature though. When it gets too hot, it will artifact and if you keep pushing it you risk perminate damage.
Graphiccellerator is fun and easy to use, but Rorqual put all those warning in there for a reason.

My strategy for 6800 Ultra overclocking is:
*Look at the range of 3rd party vendor Nvidia cards and see what range of overclocking they choose for the 6800 chipset (the range is 400-450 processor speed & 550 memory)
*Read up on what PC users are successfully overclocking the Ultra to.
*Use "Temperature Monitor" utility (which gives the two temperature readouts from the video card) to study normal heat patterns for a couple of weeks prior to overclocking.
*Increase values by small increments, never exceeding the processor limit used by OEM Ultra vendors (450) Pay careful attention for ay visual glitches and temperature increases. Dont leave computer unattended when first trying a new higher value.
*I have also added a Zalman 700 fan which apart from making it cooler halves the fan noise.
*I have my 6800 Ultra now at 450/600. My fps in games is 10% higher and GioFX Benchmark weent from 8000 to 8900 and redraw is snappier. No visual problems or kernel panics and operational temperature (with the new fan) is still 5 degrees celsius cooler than the stock model at normal speed with normal fan.
* Note also that the Nvidia have performance choking routines if the temperature gets too hot. This wont save your card, but might cancel any overclocking gains if the card isnt cooled appropriately.
* Note that even changing the fan is not recommended for the faint hearted or non-savvy, and overclocking is only for those who fully realise its risks. (Warning: Both actions will void warranty/AppleCare)
* It is Winter where I am and I'm only running one 21 monitor, so with summer temperatures and a second or larger monitor I might have to bring it down a bit, but it 'seems' to be working very well so far
Having said all that, all my 3d frame rates are noticeably higher and my card runs quieter and cooler.

ummmm, and I the only one Lateralus that sees that the baninated Amacapart has resurrected himself as HUMANMEDIA to continue this thread and start new ones ? Isn't that one of the dudes that threatend to give out your name, address, and phone# at strangedogs? If so, he should go along with his tool hpence who keeps defending the ebay thief. This guy has been banned like everywhere... ebay, cubeowner, paypal, and here and he keeps showing up under name after name after name. he's like a bad dream. Please make this nightmare go away for good. We'll all sleep better knowing our names, addresses, & phone#s aren't being given out and he can't rip anybody of here like he did to so many people before on ebay. thanx in advance.

Read all my posts - I am just trying to give people information based on my own experience of overclocking my Apple Nvidia 6800 Ultra in the hope others can benefit from this. You are getting paranoid. I have nothing to do with whomever you are talking about. And why are you attacking me?
