i replaced my cracked LCD screen on my Ibook g4 (bought aug. 2005) because I refused to pay the $900 to Apple to do it.

This naturally voided my general warranty.

However, if I buy Applecare in the next few weeks, will Apple fix my broken superdrive?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Applecare extends the warranty from one year to three. If they are going to repair the superdrive, Applecare will make no difference. Its already under warranty until August.

I would guess that they will tell you if they find evidence that your DIY repair has caused the drive failure, you will have to pay for it. If not it should be covered.

If you had any screws leftover or anything, its best to consult the engineer before (s)he even touches it. If (s)he says a missing screw is evidence that the fault is yours, take it elsewhere. If (s)he says only a torn ribbon cable or a foreign object or something could have damaged the drive, then you will be OK. Unless you tore any cables or left a screwdriver in there.....

Thank you very much for the quick reply! I am 100% positive that the LCD screen repair did not make the drive faulty, as I really did not work in that area of the computer.

Where do you suggst I take it? Should I call Apple directly and see what they can do before I take it to my local Apple Store?

Thanks again!

Apple will simply refer you to your nearest warranty repair centres.
