I'm trying to figure out a way to fit EL lighting strips behind my keyboard and draw off the LCD power to light them in my 12" Powerbook. I know how to get to the power inverter, but does anyone know if it's possible to draw off of it without screwing something up? I know someone did this using LED lights on an iBook before. Any insight would be appreciated.

You may affect the max. brightness of your LCD by doing that. LEDs would be alot less power hungry.

That sounds very interesting, if you happen to do this, please post some pics.

It seems like it would dim the LCD to do that. That may be worth it, but still. If you are terribly ambitious, you may try to draw the power directly from the battery.

If you use small LEDs, and plenty of shiny surfaces to maximise reflections, you ought to be able to run a couple from the keyboards bus power. The keyboard already has a couple of LEDs for the caps and num lock keys, you ought to be able to add a couple more from those and bypass the switches they use. Bit fiddly in practise, but much simpler in theory.

there are lots of places to draw 5V from ... the USB ports for one. thats easy as hell. and don't use EL... anything thats gonna use an inverter is gonna be inefficient. use LEDs that shine through clear plastic bars or something.
