I am getting ready to begin a fairly large video project on my G4 Sawtooth. It is currently running with a 1GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. The processes in Final Cut run slower than desired. Is there anyway I can get more speed without much money? I am a college student with little money! Thanks!

MAX DA RAM ......it'll take 2GB! and run way faster. This should only cost ~$150-200

Also, you could buy a faster upgrade card (up to dual 1.8's are available), then sell your 1 ghz card (to me?) to recoup some of the cost

you can PM me if interested in making a deal......

You can't change the bus speed. 100MHz is it.

I was able to find some RAM at a fairly good price, so I am just waiting for it to come in now. Thanks for the offer with the processor, but I don't have the money to upgrade that right now.

Another option would be to upgrade to a digital audio or quicksilver. I think the price difference on ebay is around $50-100. This gives slight improvements to everything and a faster system bus. You should be able to swap the CPU from your sawtooth into a DA/QS (some brands, like powerlogix don't let you do this, but a sonnet will). Assuming your RAM is PC133, it should work good in a QS/DA. Downside is that QS/DA machines only support 1.5Gb RAM.

It will put you in a better position to upgrade later on. You will have a better AGP slot (4X) and 4 PCI slots instead of 5. The faster AGP means you can mod core image capable G5 cards like the 9600pro and 9650 to work in your G4. Faster gaming, and better performance in things like Final Cut.

The other cheap upgrade is another hard drive to use as a scratch partition. A 120Gb drive (the largest you can put in a pre 2002 powermac) with 8Mb cache should be around 70USD.

DVD burners are good too. Pick up a Pioneer 106, 107, 108 or 109 from ebay for 30USD or so.
