Just curious... there has been some discussion about flashing Pioneer superdrives on the forums, but not that much concern or attention seems to have been paid. Recently, I wanted some sort of way to start burning dual-layer dvd movies, and also for data back up, but didn't feel like removing my current none dual layer superdrive, finding some dual layer and apple compatible drive, paying all that money, having to use patch burn, etc. Just wasn't worth it, so I thought I'd give "flashing" a try.
Needless to say... I didn't know ANYTHING about flashing, nothing. And in less than 45 minutes, I learned about the process, how and why it works, and correctly (and safely!) flashed my drive. It now burns, reads, and rewrites at faster speeds (a bump in ALL speeds) and it does dual layer. Not one single coaster.
I started with the stock apple "superdrive" which was installed in the revB dual g5's. Specifically, it was a Pioneer DVR-117. Using the simple guide I found (by googling) here, http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/tips/Flas...-117guide.html , I was all set, and now own a "supported" Pioneer DVR-108.
The link above provides you with all you need, the procedure is quick, and has a few checks to make sure it is compatible and ok. Provided you actually have a 117 to begin with, and you dont kick out the power during the process.... this should work sweet and without a hitch!
[edit] Because Apple in the newest version of OS X supports the DVR-108, you don't need to worry about running Patchburn, and you don't need to worry about compatibility. All my Apple apps recognize the new drive, and all the speed bumps, and the dual layer. Toast titanium also has no problems with this. Perfectly integrated!
How many of you here on the forums have flashed your superdrive... are any of you planning on it?

I flashed my DVR-110 without issues. It was pretty easy, just follow the directions.

I flashed my MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815A in my Titanium 1 Ghz PowerBook G4 a few years back. Doubled the speed of the DVD-R burning and added DVD-RW capability. I've kept the flash files to restore it if need be, but nothing has ever gone wrong.

How About the SONY DVD RW DW-U10A?
For us Rev. A Mac Users? I forget what our inhibited firmware takes after, but from research I remember that the pc side was a lot faster and more reliable with a wider option of media.

Don't try. It won't help, and I doubt there is alternative firmware out there, much less firmware that woul speed anything up.
