Hey everyone,
I've done a lot of research but I have not found this specific scenario, so before I go drop a few hundred bucks on parts I was wondering if this would work.
The upper case of my 1.33ghz non-backlit g4 aluminum pb has suffered from the pitting problem, and also has a nasty little dent to the left of the trackpad - thus, I'm feeling like replacing it.
I've had backlit keyboard envy ever since it became standard-issue. As far as I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong), the entire backlit keyboard mechanism is built into the upper case - fiber optics, LEDs, everything. So, is there any reason why I couldn't do the following:
1) Purchase a new upper case for the backlit keyboard 15" model and reinstall my current keyboard with it, thus gaining a backlit keyboard
or
2) Purchase a new upper case for the backlit keyboard 15" model and purchase/install a backlit keyboard (with the designated backlight keys)?
I assume there aren't any special connections to the motherboard, just the standard cables as in the non-backlit aluminum?
Any reason why this won't work? Thanks for your time!

Not really. I've been inside my mac before, and aside from keeping track of a few screws it's really pretty painless. I figure, since a new top case costs roughly the same, backlight or no backlight, I might as well get the extra functionality!
Anyone have any thoughts?

It would also depend on whether your PB has the connectors for the backlit kb and ALS etc as I would assume there are parts that your PB does not have.

There are two ambient light sensors which sit on the logic board under the speaker grills. You would need those too. I believe all the connections are in place on the top case (backlit keyboard was a CTO option on the 1.33 as I recall). Last time I had one open, it had a spare ribbon cable connection. Can't think what else it would have been for.
I have a feeling the keyboards are a separate service part.

So the ambient light sensors are not a part of the top case, but are wired to the logic board itself? Ah, interesting, i didn't know that. in that case perhaps I should just replace the top case and leave it at that.
Thanks for the info everyone!
