Hi. New here. Have Replaced my original G4 533 DP (Digital Audio) with Gigadesign DP 1.8Ghz. Upgrade comes with two fans and they are very noisy. I haven't got my case open at present but I'm guessing they are 80mm fans. They have a little Molex connection I think.
Has anyone replaced these fans with say Panaflo or Pabst (Spelling?). What would be a quiet alternative?
For that matter is there an alternative for PSU and the large 120mm Case fan?
I have Radeon 9800 PRO 128Mb and have replaced the fan with a Zalman VF 700 Cu. adds some weight, but infinitely better than the one ATI supply. Machine seems to run cooler as well, no stats to back that up though, just feels cooler.
Many thanks

I replaced the 10x50x50 mm fan of my GigaDesign SP 1.2 with a Pabst 15x50x50. The thicker fan makes it possible with more efficent fan design. It is quiter (a bit) and still cools better than the orginal fan
Due to the small clearance fan to case I had to remove part of the ZIP bay to make room for the Pabst fan. Deeper fans are good but make sure that you have room for them.
The 120mm case fan is very poorly used. If you look around the mounting of the fan there are several holes that short circuit the fan so insted of pumping cool air into the case it also just recyle it Closing those openings with sturdy tape will help cooling the whole case.

There are manufacturers that make foam for sound-insulating cases. You might look into that. That would be quite a bit simpler, I think.

Actually that is a REALLY REALLY bad idea. Those holes are there for a reason: To cool your hard drives. It pressurizes the side of the case inbetween the plastic and the metal frame, then there are cooling holes where all the hard drives are mounted and air gets blown underneath and across them. Using temperature monitor, I monitored the temps of the drives with the case open or closed. Seems weird, but the drives temperatures PLUMMET when you shut the case, because of this cooling design. Throwing tape over those holes will make your drives run much hotter.

I've heard similar things (about my Amiga 3000). Things are typically there for a reason.

FrankeniMac,
I stand corrected. However, I think it is a bad design still. Cases should have clearcut flow of heat out of the case. Any design that recycle air is a bad design, so that case may need that recycle but it still is an ugly solution.
It is also possible to put a HD cooler on top of the HD. This also would blow air straight up towards the CPU as well as cool the HD.

hd coolers create even more noise.... plus blowing warm hd air up towards an upgraded CPU isn't going to help things.
