You can do it. a local mac store here did it, but I have no clue how.

I wouldn't do it. I have one, and I have looked into it. Just get more RAM, a faster HDD or a CPU upgrade (or all). Between the cost of those components, you could start saveing for an MB. There are G4 CPU ugrades available for those.
