the remote won't work properly/at as many angles if you cover the Apple with a print-out of your own design.

The Apple logo is the IR sensor, and the remote needs a clear path to work properly. So covering it up isn't really a great idea unless you don't use your remote much. Personally, I don't see why Apple didn't make the remotes bluetooth

Bluetooth will munch batteries a whole lot more quickly than IR does. Thats why. Probably would have cost more too.

You think about how long a bluetooth keyboard lasts though. I think a remote would last quite a while if the battery was only being used with each button press.

Regardless, it would drain the batteries long before an IR remote would. Plus it makes it more difficult for people to find other ways of controlling Front Row. Apple has a long history of making it difficult to find cheaper ways around buying their products.
