A couple of weeks ago I picked up a Mac II at a surplus auction. It has a strange card in it that I can not identify. The card was mounted under the hard drive / floppy drive bracket using a custom bracket attached to the underside of the 2nd floppy mounting area. It had 3 cables coming out of it. One is a 4 wire ribbon cable which goes to a NuBus slot; I think it is for power. One is an ADB cable that does out the back of the computer and plugs into an ADB port. The 3rd is a DB9 cable that goes out that back of the computer; the male connector that plugs into the strange card has only 6 pins (1,5,6,7,8,9) and is heaver than a normal DB9 serial cable. Both the ADB and DB9 cables just go out the back of the computer via a removed slot cover.
You can see a pictures of the card
here and
here. All the text that I can find on the card, other than circuit labels, is: Comp side, MADE IN USA, FAB 45011 REV 1, ASSY 72011 REV <blank spot>; CIRCUIT SIDE, MADE IN USA, (C) 1987. A friend of mine found some information on the main chip
here. Otherwise I have been unable to find any more information on this device.
No other devices came with the computer and the hard drive had been removed. The SCSI & power cables are still there so I assume it had a hard drive and the seller removed it for security reasons; most of the sellers at that auction destroy all the hard drives before sending the computer to auction just to be sure that no sensitive data escapes.
I do not know what this card is intended to do; does anyone have any ideas? The various suggestions I have heard are touch-screen controller, MIDI, synthesizer, and serial to ADB converter.
