I've seen sooo many question in the past from different websites, people asking if you can use a laptop LCD as an external monitor. Obviously that doesn't work due to the design of the graphics cards and the different communications protocols. Being that I do tech consulting, I take my laptop with me everywhere, and I would *LOVE* to be able to use my laptop as a monitor when troubleshooting computers. So I've got a new variant on the old question.

Is it possible, to buy an external LCD, hack it apart, mount it inside a laptop bezel, connect it to the external monitor port for the actual graphics connection, but then power it off the power source for the original *internal* lcd?

This applies more to my Toshiba than my PB, except that I haven't found any other halfway decent laptop mod websites with actual knowledge.

not an answer to your actual question but i saw this on Macupdate today

ScreenRecycler 0.74 - MacUpdate

ScreenRecycler allows you to use any networked computer as additional display.
Most Mac users have a spare computer sitting right next to their main computer on their desk (like the old iMac). ScreenRecycler now enables you to use this spare computer as second display for your Mac. You can even use an idle machine for that purpose. Just start ScreenRecycler on your Mac then connect to ScreenRecycler via VNC from your old machine.

Recycle your old Mac and Windows machines !
As for your question of hacking a screen and putting it in a laptop bezel - why? just keep the screen as is if you're going to use it for troubleshooting. One less thing to worry about when working out what's wrong.
