Is this a boot password or a login password? If the latter, you can reformat the drive by booting off of external media such as the Tiger/Leopard install DVD.

To reset the administrator password using the Mac OS X disc:

Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.

NOTE: If you are using Remote Install Mac OS X, make sure your computer is set up for remote installation, and then continue from step 3.

Using Remote Install Mac OS X

When you hear the startup tone, press and hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.

In the Installer, choose Utilities > Reset Password.

Follow the onscreen instructions to change the password.

I have used this method on a friends Macbook Pro. I can vouch and say it works.

Your "friend" sells you his powerbook, doesn't give you the password and left all his data and account on it ?

I believe the usual disapprobation about "stolen computers" should be recorded here.
