Hello everyone,
I have had some good luck and purchased a desktop beige g3 PowerMac 266mh model for $175. Everything works great on it, except for the cd-rom which does not open (I knew this when I bought it).
I would like to do some upgrading on this computer. Here are my thoughts:
Can I replace the cd-rom with a cd-rw that will be supported by OS X? If not, do I need to find an Apple cd-rom from ebay, or will a third party cd-rom serve me just as well?
There isn't an internal modem with this model. While I'm aware that there are many external modems that I can purchase, I've always preferred the internal variety. I have done many searches for an internal modem that will work in a beige G3, but am only able to find internal modems for b/w g3's. Does anyone know where I can purchase an internal modem for this beige G3?
I also own a B/W G3 and I've been considering upgrading its processor. If I do upgrade the B/W G3, would I be able to take the 400 mh processor from it and put it into the beige G3?
Thanks for your help,
lw

Wow. Nice find. I origionally had a beige G3/266 MT and have added the following upgrades:
Metabox G4/4000
640MB RAM
Keyspan USB card
OrangeMicro Firewire card
Voodoo 5/5500 PCI card
and somehow managed to cram 3 more HDs into it.
As for replacing the dead CD-ROM with a CDRW that should work. You can also use the G3/400 from your B&W G3 but you'll need to change the jumpers on your mobo to run the CPU at the full 400 instead of 266.Also there was an issue with beige G3s about certain volatge regulators. Check www.xlr8yourmac.com for info on that and the jumper settings. Another thing you can do is max out the RAM. Beige DTs can use 3 128MB DIMMS and the MTs can use 3 256MB DIMMs. With a little upgrading yu still won't have a shiney new G4, but you can have a machine that will serve you well for many more years. Happy upgrading!
