I agree. A different color might look good though. Also, what about shrink-wrapping it instead of using (I think) contact paper. That way you could always decide to go back to your orignal color or even change colors without harming the case. Only concern might be the heat used to put wrap in place. Just a thought...

Something tells me that would not be especially durable. Plus, for some reason, I imagine it leaving a nasty bit of residue when it's time to take it off.

I don't think the residue should be a problem. Naptha or alcohol should cut it, without harm to the polycarbonate.
Looks like it would protect the surface more than damage it, like a bug-bra on a yuppie-assault-vehicle(SUV).
I still don't understand why somebody doesn't sandblast the paint off the inside of the clear cover and repaint from the back...
That's what I plan for mine when I get one this fall.

Yea that is my friends page, It makes it a lot more scratch restient, because it is like a thick contact plastic thing. He told me that he re-did it and didn't have that big of a problem with the sticky stuff staying on the polycarb.

Sandblasting? Hell...that's harsh! Just use regular isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol! That removes the white paint perfectly.

I agree: a chemical removal would be much more safe, sane, and clean looking.

Didn't anyone here see the MacNN (I think) article and the guys website on painting his iBook? looked good... wish i had the link

I am the author of this iBook Mod.....

The reason I did this, is because in the first two weeks I had my iBook, it quickly became covered with scratches. The contact paper I used on this mod, comes off easily if you pick at it enough. I took my original cover off in two pieces, and it left no residue, (though results may vary with different manufactures). I do like the peel white color of the iBook, but the shiny surface simply scratches way too easily. I shrunk-wrapped the corners with a heat gun. The thing you have to remember is that the contact paper is thin, so to shrink wrap the corners, it only takes about 2 seconds of heat ( don't worry about melting the case of your iBook, it can take it, Why else would they make bullet proof vests from it?)

Contact paper comes off easily, don't fret, if it scratches, you can peal it off and replace it!!!!!

One more thing,
if you ever get any kind of residue on polycarbonate, don't use "Goo-Off" it will eat through the shine, and ruin the plastic.

For those who want to do a very subtle mod, I have an Idea.

It won't make your iBook look too different from the stock model, but it might be really cool, in that double take, 'is it or isn't it?' sorta way.

Frosted iBook. Instead of repainting the inside plastic. Get a small piece of polycarbonate to test on first then try some glass frosting/etching agents. The book would still be white (it might take a very slight lime green tinge) but it would be partially translucent. I know the agents are available for glass, but I'm sure you can find them for plastics as well.

Let me know if anyone tries this.

BTW, what WTF is going on with these fora?

I think it would be cool to see somebody remove that white paint, and then replace it with a different color (inside of the case). Then you could get that awesome glossy shine with any color. Use black and you would have an Excellent gloss black (almost like piano gloss) iBook. Maybe someone could try a thin coat of black (like a tint) and try to emulate the look of the Pro Mouse. That would be the iBook to have.

Sorry I'm all talk, if I had an iBook, I'd do it myself and show you guys.

PAINT THE INSIDE SILVER!!! AHHH!! Like an Airport Base Station!

I wish I had an iBook of my own to try it on. Too bad I'm stuck with a silver Pismo where the stilver stuff scratches off easily.

Anybody have a recent Service Price Pages, or the modern equivalent?
It would be cool if replacement top & bottom halves were inexpensive enough (relatively speaking, of course) to have one to painted or whatever, and one set to keep in the box in case it has to go see the Doctor.

Hmm.. Or, mold your own!

ya, after I posted, I saw the "clear as ice" book and read that isopropyl takes the paint right off. I planned a fine bead blast to diffuse the color, but by using a solvent on the paint, you could get the same effect as painting an RC car body from the inside. From there the options are limitless, since whateve color you choose will never scratch off from the inside.

No apple service center can do repairs on ibooks, they are all "mail in repair" I work for an apple specialist service center and we can't order anything more than an airport card and power adapter. But I saw that apple had made place for 6 new product catagories I do wonder what will come next.
