I got an old IBM and I took out a Riva 128ZX card from it made by nVidia. I want to try and install it into a 266mhz G3 (beige). I'm not sure if this will work (defiantly not), but I want to then try and find some drivers that could run it. I thought of using the GeForce2 MX first, then from there try random video card drivers. Am I doing something stupid? Will it not work or blow up the computer or just not do anything. Waist of time?

You don't have to worry about blowing up your computer, that worst thing that would happen is that it wouldn't work. Since some video card drivers work with all cards from a certain manufacturer, in this case Nvidia, you may be in luck. The only way to find out is to give it a try.
