I want to bring my Cube 450 up a bit... to at least 500 perhaps higher if temp and processor can handle it....
I have found a lot of pages covering every other mac but the cube.
Can someone point me at the right direction?
Have anyone of you done it? in that case, to what speed?
What processor temperature did you get?

I'm not sure if the Cube uses the same daughtercard configuration as the tower.
If it does, Sonnet makes processor upgrades for that type of connector. You can get a 500MHz or a Dual 500MHz. Unfortunately, they're expensive. $1000 for the Dual 500. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting the Cube.

OK, thanks!
The Cube do have the same kind of cards as the tower....I talked to a friend of mine who is a apple service technician about geting a faster apple towercard and put it in my cube and he said that he could get me one in that case. =)
I'm now trying to find stories and stuff about people having modified there cards or exchanged them for ones with higher speeds.
The funny thing is that the cube _is_ actually built to house a fan in the bottom of the cube!
The cube is also built to handle a larger full height optical drive and not the thin slotin they are using today.
Apple seems to have had some thoughts about moving it upwards in speed and if needed using a built-in fan to get the help the heat getting out!
Thanks anyway, I'll have a look at the Sonnetcards and see if I can use them or an other apple card or if I need to overclock my own.

Petter - REALLY? I know the processor is on a daughtercard but I thought there were size issues. **Very Curious** to know what kind of upgrade solutions the technician cites as possible.
Please keep us informed!

any results yet?
I´m thinking of upgrading mine too, would be glad to hear your experiences.

I have done some research and this is what I have found out.
The Cube is designed to hold a 80 mm x 20 mm fan in the bottom of the chassi. This fan would not need to run at its supposed rpm but a lower and therefore with a much lower noise level!
A fan in the cube would also make it possible to at least cool off twice the 450/500 processor heatdisapation opening up for a processor with higher clockspeed or parhaps Dual as well!
The physical limitation of the processorboard is 90 mm x 120 mm and that is the size of the Dual board! I'm not sure though if its possible to use a Dual in the Cube due to the need to change the special plate that transfer heat from the processor to the heatsink, it need to be rearranged or modified and if the Cube motherboard and powersupply is capable of deliver enough power!
I have not tried anything of this yet due to that I dont have an extra single processorcard [someone wanna gimme one? ;-) ] but a 667 processorcard is desidned for a 133 MHz bus and the cube' run at 100 MHz that should make the 667 card to run at 600 in a unmodified cube!
These are my conclusions, I have not tested any of them due to the lack of hardware but I'd love to try some of these things out!
So all I need is a 667 card or a dual 500 that perhaps is a leftover from some Dualupgraded macuser?!

nice info, thank you very much. I´ve played with the though of overclocking my standard processor card (kinda done it years ago on my *umm* Atari Falcon, same small resistors...) but getting a 667 or even faster card sounds far more promising.

typo or calculation error
At 133MHz Bus speed the multiplicator is 5 for the 667, therefore it would run at only 500MHz in an unmodified (say 100MHz Bus) Cube.

Ohh, sorry. a mixed typo and lost text.
According to xlr8yourmac, the 450/500 cards is not coveclockable by moving some resistors. But the 667 is. By placing that on a 100MHz bus would need it to be oc'ed to 6X busspeed to make it run in 600 on a unmodified cube (that means not bus oc'ed ) =)
That do sound a bit more realistic, right?

yepp
If i had one (667 card) i would even try 7x multiplicator, should run okay.
Only problem is I don´t have one and neither do I know where to get it from.

I once read about how you could OC the bus speed on the 450/500 G4s but I think it was talking about the Towers. But it used OpenFirmware

Yes but it was a problem with the memory banks (only two can be used) and booting into OS X was not possible if I remember right... =(

Wow, this is totally sweet. I now have more upgrade options for my faithful friend . A new video card and a dual processor upgrade would really extend the life of it. Thanks guys

I've actually posted about this a couple of times. i saw a 733 processor for sale, and asked if there is a bus multiplier limit on the daughter card. Also it would seem that with the same connector it should be compatible. I'd love to make my g4 450(overclocked 400) into a G4 700-750. If you get any info on this please post it back here. Your right about the bus overclock as well. You loss ram slots and have OSX boot probs because the bus timing can not be hacked in 10.
