Just thought about this now. Has anyone replaced the (useless) irda port on the front of their rev b iMac with something more useful like a single firewire port? Can the firewire hardware necessary to do such a hack be purchased someplace?

You can't hack firewire onto a serial port (which is what the IR is.)
Easier and more practical is the HARMONi upgrade by sonnet, that gives you a 500mhz G3 and Firewire.

Firewire requires a firewire physical chip and some discrete electronics to be added, and you just can't put them on a serial (IR) interconnect.
