I looked in my Mac today, there's a fan in the power supply, a fan on the processor hear sink, and that GIANT fan that blows on where the PCI cards would go.
I have a 533MP Buy the way...
Now, since I have no extra cards or drives or anything else in there that would make extra heat, does anyone think I can unplug that big fan? Or at least put a resistor on it so it slows way down? Its very loud, and my Mac is only 6 feet from my bed. Plus it is winter now (close enough anyway).
What does anyone think....

The side fan is actually the quietest fan in your computer. You probably wouldn't notice a noise difference. In my G4, I replaced that fan with a more powerful, louder fan. I put a switch on it so I can turn it on/off when I want. Even with it off, the processor doesn't get very hot. I have a dual 450. Right now I am running two instances of SETI, so both processors are at 100% 24/7. The temp is 40.4° C right now, and the fan is off. If your video card doesn't have a fan, it might over heat though. Mine has a fan on it.

www.xlr8yourmac.com has some great info about quieting G4s, by replacing fans and installing foam to isolate them from the case.
Check there.

My graphics card doesn't come with a fan, its a GeForce 2. And i read about that foam thing, and thats only if your fans are vibrating against your case, which mine are not. I'll have to open up this thing later and see who the noisy culprit really is.

The foam thing damps resonanace , not only vibration. Part of the noise you hear might be the case resonating with the fan. Foam will solve that problem, too.

believe me, i'v examined it thoroughly, what i here is pure fan blowing. but now i can't tell if its the big one or the one in the power supply. i'd still assume its the big one because its just do damn huge. Is there a program out there that can give me my processor's temperate? I know there that other one for X thermodock or something, but that doesn't work on my computer.

I've got a DP500 and it has the side fan and the P/S fan only.
Two weeks ago the P/S fan got so loud I couldn't think. The bearings went.
Got a 12.95 replacement and took the P/S apart(major PIA) and now all is quiet again.

Try unplugging the fans one at a time and figure out which one is the noisy one.
