I have a 450 MhZ G4 system with an ATI Rage 128 Pro card installed in it, connected to the first graphite 17" Apple CRT monitor. I've had this setup for about a year. Over the past week, the screen has been making popping noises when turning on of off (startup, shutdown, sleep). The image on the screen is large at first, but then shrinks down to the correct resolution. Over the past two days or so, it has been doing this WITHOUT the screen turning off and just yesterday it turns out that the resolution that I was using forever (1280x960 @ 75 Hz) is no longer able to be run. I am now running at 1180x870 @ 75 Hz. I've tried degaussing but nothing works. Please help! This is a total Apple system, no added on parts (running OS 9.1). Thanks!!!

The "popping" sound is most likely coming from the flyback coil... The HIGH Voltage supply for the CRT.
Cause could be dust on top of it, providing an arc path. Or it could be the dielectric of the coil's case is breaking down (component failure)
The longer the popping continues, the more permanent the damage.
Either take it in to a shop, or try cleaning the top of the coil after letting the monitor sit unplugged for a few days. The HV wire goes to the side of the CRT and looks like a spark plug wire. You can make a shorting probe if you're impatient and brave. Long insulator with a copper rod, braid and an alligator clip to put to ground(case/chassis)
CRT's run at 15-30,000 volts so BE CAREFUL
