I read a revue(?) at LowEndMac on the Performa 6320 that said it was a waste of money to buy a modem any faster than 28k. because it c can`t handle it.
SAY IT AIN`T SO

Haha, no.

56k modems are the lowest speed modem you should have by now. 56k modem connections are predictably faster than 28k. Depending on where you live, the phone line quality in your house/area, computer speed, or simply the noise/static on the line, can restrict a 56k modem to 28k (Believe me, I know this). If you live in the city, in a not-ancient house, with a good isp, you can get >4.0k/s speeds.

Simply get a cheap 56k modem. they are almost always under $100, and you can use them on newer macs. Borrow a friend's modem, or buy one and keep the recipt. If you get good speeds, be happy. If not, call your phone company to find out why (or just forget the whole thing). hope that helped

Your missing me here.
What the man said was that a 56k would be a waste of money because the 6320 can`t prosses info fast enough (or something along those lines)....
What I need is someone (who knows for sure)to tell me he`s full of it.

I have no first hand experience with a 6320 but I would imagine that it would have no problem with a 56k. I assume you mean a serial modem (do they still make those?) but I believe a 56k modem is the fastest that the mac serial bus can transfer at. I have a 6400 at home. It come with a stock geoport 28.8 (I won't discuss how much geoports blow) but then I got a cable modem in the house and bought a 10BaseT Farallon ethernet PCI card for it. Believe me, you feel the speed. Even though its a lot different than plugging a modem in. Is the review talking about an inter Comm slot modem? I didn't think 56k comm slot modems existed.

Here is a freeware control panel that may help: http://www.markus-fritze.de/serialen/
The Serial Enabler allows you to:

* fix the speed of one or both serial ports at 115,200 bps or 230,400 bps on newer Macintosh Computers. Ideal for V.34 modems or ISDN terminal adapters!
* locks the speed for a specific or all available baudrates to another baudrate.

sorry.

ouch, maybe a 56k modem would be a waste even on a 230,400bps serial connection. My reasoning is that "bps/8=bytes per sec.", and that is 28,800bytes. translated, that is 2.88k, or a 28k modem.
I now see why USB was such an important switch.

"hello" is correct, I used to use the exact control panel too.

This is a quote from the artical I mentioned:
This series has several serious hardware flaws. All machines
are shipped with a plug in the modem port because the modem
port is disabled when a modem card is installed in the comm
slot. If the internal modem card is removed, the modem port
is usable, but because all machines shipped with the internal
modem, Apple scrimped on the port controller. There is no
hardware handshaking in the ports, therefore an external
modem faster than 9600 baud is useless.* There is no solution
to this, and there is no 56k support for these machines.
fastest modem made for this series is the Global Village
Teleport Platinum 28.8K comm slot modem. This modem is
upgradable to 33.6 via a flash ROM upgrade downloadable from
Global Village's site. Good luck in finding one of these
modems (I think they made less than 10,000).
