Is my warranty void yet? Oh I think it is!!!

Yup, I did what we all want to do. Obviously its not nearly done, I just had enough for the night. It is literally very rough around the edges, but I plan on touching it up quite a bit. Once I put the cover back on, it should look good, then I also plan on making a slit in the bottom piece of the cover and re-attaching that piece, it will look great. Now I can burn my CD's, and watch some DVD's, and it only cost me $80. The big surprise was how easy it really was once I just dove in. I did everything I needed to do what is done so far with a single pair of thicker than usual pliers. And yes my hands DO indeed hurt right now. Future plans for this Bad Boy of a computer include more monitors and a SCSI raid of currently undetermined size. Anyone wanna hire me to do theirs? You all say no now, but you might reconsider when I'm done ;-)

Great then how do you get it to work? It mounts the DVD's fine but the DVD Player app tells me it can't find a DVD Drive, even though the DVD is on the desktop and even though Apple System Profiler says it is a DVD drive right where it is. The DVD and CD are both on one channel, and I set both jumpers to cable select. Whats the deal?

Set the DVD Drive as master and the CDRW as Slave. Do not use Cable Select. Then it should work fine. The Dvd Player wants the DVD Drive as Master.

Ok it all works fine, now my last foreseeable problem is hooking up both at the same time. Physically, the DVD has to be on bottom and the CDRW on top. But internally, the DVD must be the master and the CDRW must be the slave. The internal IDE cable in these towers is actually just long enough to attatch both drives (which makes me suspicious) but it is far to short ot twist them around and hook them up in reversed order. So what I need is a special IDE ribbon that has only two connectors, a male on one end and a female on the other. About 12" long, that should be all I need to hook this thing up perfect. The dremel has been delayed until tomorrow, so I don't get to clean it up yet. Which is too bad because that red LED shines right our of that thing at night.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here, why do you need to flip the cables? It shouldn't matter what order they're plugged in; this isn't SCSI My G3 has a CD as master and hard drive as slave on a channel and the cd is hooked up first and the hard drive second. Works just fine...

SCSI can be in any order on the chain, as long as thier jumpers are set right, but I was always told that slave has to be the plug closest to the mobo and the master is the end of the ribbon. Right? Anyone?

My reference to SCSI was just that you don't have to have a particular drive on the end, namely the terminated one. Forget it, it made sense to me at the time But the order of IDE doesn't matter, note my setup and this here:

from http://www.wdc.com/support/techinfo/general/jumpers.asp

"Note: Designation of a drive as either master or slave is generally determined by jumper configuration, not by the order in which it is daisy-chained to the other drive. The only exception is if the drive is jumpered "cable select", and both the system and ribbon cable support cable select. In this case, master and slave is determined by the position on the data ribbon cable. Depending how the system controls the cable select line on the ribbon cable determines where the master and slave need to be attached. Refer to your system manual for more information."
