Hey. I just helped a friend replace her Yikes! G4’s internal CD-ROM with a Yamaha CDW4416E CD-RW. Anyone know how we can get the computer to boot from this? (Holding down ‘C’ doesn’t cut it.)

Thanks!

Since no one has responded yet, I'll give this a shot though perhaps it's a little different on Yikes!. When you press C at startup the computer uses a driver (hardware or software) to load from a connected CD drives. The Yamaha drive can't be driven from this Apple driver, as a result, you can't boot off of it. There's really not a good solution if this is what is happening. You could try to install the CD-ROM into the unit as well, but it would require hardware modification to make it work. People here agree? You might consider an iPod to boot off of in a jam, I think it should work fine on that machine.

xlr8yourmac.com has a database of all the drives people have used, and whether CD booting works or not.

I expect if the Yamaha isn't happening for you, you can modify the case of your G3 to have two CD drives, instead of the zip space...

Hey, all. Thanks for your help. Actually, I tried booting my beige G3 off of my own Yamaha CRW4416S (the same model, only SCSI) using cmd-shift-option-delete, and guess what—it worked!

(Hopefully my friend’s will do the same! I told her to try it, so we shall see….)
