What should I do with my dead Apple Studio Display? The CRT stopped working (after a few loud CRACK's) last week . I got a new 19" Samsung, but what to do with the old one .

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but how much will it cost to fix? I've got an old multiscan monitor hooked up to my B/W G3. I've been looking for a cheap way to get a B/W display. Any chance we can make a deal and I still come out ahead of buying a working used b/w display.

just a thought.

If it died after a loud crack, try a local TV shop and see if replacing the flyback coil will fix it.
That's the high voltage transformer for the CRT.
If the breakdown only took out the coil, you should be able to have it fixed cheaper than a used monitor and you keep ColorSync.

Err, just out of interest, was the day of death preceded by the occasional 'pop' of the monitor, accompanied by a tempoart deformation of the picture?

I ask becase this seems to be a common problem with this CRT. There are a couple of threads at the Macfixit forums (I think) about the whole syndrome, as well as much discussion at Apple's own boards (that is, if they haven't deleted the threads there because they don't like the sound of it ). There's even talk of a class action lawsuit.

Actually, my own Studio Display CRT has started to make the occasional (like, once every 3 weeks) pop... I like the look of that AppleCare box on my shelf...
