After seeing the original topic about a back-lit keyboard, I got to thinking. I had this idea, and I have no idea how feasible it is, but I want all my keys to light up. I want them to light up with an LED like the caps lock key does. But I only want them to light up when the key is pressed. It has no practical application, what-so-ever, it would just be cool. It looks like there is room to drill and place a small LED at the top of each key. Any ideas or thoughts at all would be welcome.

Sounds like a nightmare to me..

It would be kind of like those Casio keyboards that light up the key you're supposed to play, no? Um, just wondering, but wouldn't your finger block most of the light? Could you even see any of it when your hands are over the keyboard?

I guess you could do it. It would take creating a pretty complex matrix under the keys to provide contact closures for all the keys, and to provide power/signal to lights or LEDs. Let some crazy Japanese hacker figure it our first!

Running with the Casio keyboard idea-

You could write typing training software that would light up the keys and show you how to type!

Genius. All genius ideas!

It might be cool to be able to make some cool applescript that screw with the lights. There were comands to light up differrent lights on the old Apple Design Keyboards.

Count me in. You develop one, you've got my money. For all those people saying "why have one?" the same could be said about why have an apple embolem that lights up on the power book series. But I know that these are the things that warrant questions from the guy who sits next to me on the airplane or my attending during medical conferences. Or maybe Jennifer Love-Hewitt at Starbucks- OK, so that last one may be fantasy....*sigh* But the piont is that anything that gets the Macintosh name noticed will allow people to have an oppertunity to see how much better the Mac is. It worked with the imac.

Wiring would be SO much easier if you wanted them all lit at the same time. With the amount of wiring needed to make each one light when it was pressed, I don't know if you could get all that under the keyboard.

What'd be really cool is a large Indi-glo sheet right under the iBook keyboard. I'd buy one of those in a second. They use less battery power than an LED, and it would look cool as hell - not to mention being very useful for typing at night.

id buy it. I think it would rock in something like itunes with the visuals. you could have rudimentary little oscilloscope, showing the beat of the music on your keyboard.

make it or tell me how =).

A backlit keyboard would kick major booty but from previous attempts I just don't think it can be done.

That takes what would already be very difficult, and makes it pretty much impossible. I can't even begin thinking of how you would do that. You would need a super-thin LCD screen, that somehow was connected to another video output, or has a sound input, with something to translate the sound into an image. I don't think that would really be possible. I'm sure it would cost more than a whole computer, though.

I think he meant to have the keys light up in a sort of crude ocilliscope fashion. Not to display the visuals... I think that'd be possible...

I would SO buy a new keyboard if every time I punched a key, it lit up bright and faded out. My PC friends would DIE!

Yes I have PC friends... There are just TOO many of them to not have any... It adds to the excitment when you're able to make em drool with something that, to them, supposedly sucks.

So what has become of these efforts? I am quite interested in lighting my keyboard up.

I like the idea of a sheet of the glow material.
