I had this REALLY cool idea last night and wondered if anyone would help me understand the proccess if it is possible at all.
I want to re-rout the power from the pulsing Sleep LED to a square of EL Sheet so that when my iBook is closed the LED doesn't pulse anymore... but the Apple logo does instead. is this AT ALL possible? If so how much would it possibly run me and how hard would it be?
Thank you,
Mac Guru

no, sorry. The apple only glows because the screen is on. Once it goes to sleep, the screen turns off and so does the apple. Perhaps if you took a small backlight and put in behind the apple it could be done, but you wouldn't have much room.

Tzaar, no need to be a naysayer. Somebody at MacHack 2001 actually programmed a little software hack that made the area of the LCD behind the Apple logo in a new iBook (or was it a TiBook) pulsate while asleep. This resulted in higher battery drain during sleep, but achieved MacGuru's desired effect without any need for a hardware hack. I know the code is on the MacHack CD, but I don't have a copy.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Definitely possible, but you might need to find an extra power source for the EL sheet, and use the sleep signal as an actuator for this power source. (I don't know if there's enough juice in the sleep light's line). Also, I don't think that EL dims immediately, just like flourescent lighting so the pulsing might be less noticeable than that of the LED.
If you can find somewhere that'll sell you that little EL sheet, it should only cost around $20.
Good luck.

sorry, I hadn't seen that he said he wanted to do it with an EL sheet. I thought he was just saying use the logo...
