I've already asked this in another forum, but I didn't get any response. Maybe you hardware hackers will be able to tell me.

I'm getting a dual USB iBook soon, but it's a CD-RW model. I want to watch movies. Is it possible to use a Firewire case with an off the shelf DVD-ROM to watch movies on that computer?

Couldn't you have just gotten a DVD-enabled iBook and an eternal FireWire burner?

Yes, it's possible. In fact, it works.

Heh. Whoops. Actually, it's a CD-ROM model. Gotta love those typos. Maybe it was my subconscious trying to tell me something...

Well, anyways. Thanks for the info. One question, though. Does it have to be considered "Apple Approved" or whatever it is that makes a drive work and not work with Apple computers?

I think there's a special chip that used to have to be on SCSI drives to work with Macs. I hope this isn't the case with Firewire/IDE too.
