is the Antenna always on? if so is it actually connected to my machine without the airport card?

I'd like to know what I could "listen" to with my ibook... could I use a software hack to receive just about anything my antenna can see? and if so what can these Antenna's see? Are they narrow band Antennas?

goal: to listen to a large chunk of the FM band....

No, if you've got no AirPort card, the antenna is not connected to anything in your Mac. The plug is "dangling" around in the case. ;-)
