Hey check this out... I took my bondi imac that I was embarrassed with and painted it black (From the inside out) this way it looks original and wont scratch... you can't tell I didn't get it from apple this way.... I even painted the cd bezel and speaker covers from the inside... want me to post more on problems I had let me know. some of this was a little tricky and I could have done better the second time around.

Looks cool, but it's at least a 350Mhz slot loader; it's no bondi.

Nice job nextadvantage! I certainly wouldn't mind if you posted more details because this is a project I'd consider undertaking. I have a blueberry iMacDV, and have never really been happy with the color. To me it looks more greenish than blueberry.

bondi - blue berry... same difference. This was a blue berry imac and I hated the color until now... I had to replace the video board and while I had the Imac apart and having experience painting remote control car bodies I knew that it would be cool to paint it from the inside. The main body wasn't to hard to do, the key was getting the colored parts out without breaking them. Everything really just popped out except for the speaker covers and the cd cover those are machined and melted in... I used a soldering gun to fuse them back in after painting. The only thing I broke was the mounts for the stand they were screwed in and had tabs, I unscrewed the screws and broke the thing because the tabs were to strong, I ended up getting new ones and it was easy to just break the tabs off with a pair of pliers then unscrew the mounts (the tabs really had no use) good luck...

P.S. You might want to get a maintenance manual to figure out how to disassemble everything...

Sweet!

Though I think it would look cooler in a darker, translucent "smoke" color, your computer looks sweet!

Is it very reflective? I can see a little in the picture, but that might have been caused by flash in the camera.

Now for the real fun, paint the rest of it (on the outside) with your choice of flat, satin, or glossy paint, put red leds in place of the one in the power button and maybe behind the speaker grills, screw two polished zerk fittings (grease fittings from your car) onto the "chin", and perhaps do all sorts of skanky black painty things to the periphials (I kant spell) and VOILA!! DARTH iMAC!

How'd ya get the speaker grills and the part around the slot drive off, if they were machined in?? Looks VERY kick ass... my iMac is blueberry, too, and that may be something worth doing this summer... what kind of paint did you use, and how did you apply it? I'd think that paintbrush would leave streaks... spray paint, maybe? did the apple on the top pop out with the big blue back panel?
The short shall inherit the earth. Just you wait. You won't see us coming. We'll pop out from under tables, beds, and closets in hordes. So you're tall, huh? You won't be so tall when I chew off your ankles. Mofo

The speaker covers and cd rom cover are melted in and pop out easy but to get them to stay back in I re-melted them with a soldering gun, I used Acrlyc Spray Paint from Home Depo, I really dont think it matters because its on the inside the only thing you have to becarful puting it back together because the scratches will show on the out side if you scratch it. The apple logo just popped out and I pianted them to from the inside.

Good Luck

P.S. I almost painted the rest of it aluminum from the inside like the TiBook... Maybe I will try that soon...

Next, I'm curious. about how you painted the case. Myself as well having experience painting lexan r/c car bodies. Did you have to sand the inside at all, or did you just paint over the blue ? I've not taken an imac apart, but I would think that maybe the cases are basicly painted by apple. Let me know.. Thanks

They're not painted.. the Lexan Case is tinted, thus making it the same as just painting on clear plastic.

here's my Bondi iMac after painting the shell.

POS?!?!?

Exscuuuuuse me my dear sir, but I think that you should remember that without the iMac there is a very heavy chance that this board wouldn't be a site discussing what iMac is coming out next...but a board remembering the "good old days" when Apple was still solvent.

Face it. COmpard to Next, your paint job looks crap, and you shouldn't have done it.

Do what you want to your iMac...but never call it sh!t. Remember where came from ,and what it really means to have a piece of history on your desk.

Ok let me get something straight here buddy... I bought that mac with my own money and am allowed to do anything I wish to it... for you to impose your beliefs as to what I should and should not do to or with a computer is WAY beyond your bounds and you should remember that. Simply because you feel it does not suit your tastes is not a reason to get all uppity. I didn't knock down YOUR door and spray paint your shi* did I? Hmmmm I think not so you can tuck your tail between your legs and leave now. BTW he is using a newer case revision... the newer iMacs are a LOT easier to paint. I didn't have the time to paint the small stuff like the CD button. One of these days i might but I doubt it.

but never call it sh!t. Remember where came from ,and what it really means to have a piece of history on your desk.
I can call it whatever I please sir. Who in the hell are you to tell me what I can and cannot say? I know EXACTLY where it came from, I have PLENTY of macs in my house to "remind" me of the history of Apple. Yes the iMac was a god send but compared to the 800 G4 iMacs today it is sh!t and I can call it that if I feel like it. It sits by it's lonesome in the corner of my fathers office proudly pumping out tunes. That is all it does and it's good at it... but it is nowhere near a professional machine. If I want a peice of history I go to my Mac Classic... that sir is a piece of history... a pokey computer from 1998 is hardly a historical landmark... here in about 15-20 years I can say different but untill then it's a pokey computer.

Back off and mind your own. You don't like it? Don't do it. To each his own.

Mac Guru
