i have a cube. my video card options are very limited.

fortunately, i got the radeon option. unfortunately, it shipped with a fan. however, i now know that the version (of the radeon) with a heatsink works inside the cube just fine.

so, i wanna switch out my fan for a heat sink. is this possible? is it safe?

According to reader reports over at xlr8yourmac, fan-less Radeon cards can have problems in the Cube. Apple sold some fan-less Radeon cards in the Cube near the end of production. And actual owners of these Cubes complained of graphic artifacts and other video problems once the Cube heats up. YMMV of course, but you would probably get more reliability by keeping the fan - or upgrading it.

My Cube also came with an OEM Radeon card and I know how damned annoying that Radeon fan is. Tennmax makes a cooler that will fit for around $20 - the Lasagna BGA type 0. It's quieter than the original fan and also more efficient since the heat sink portion is layered to give it more surface area (ala Lasagna). I bought the Lasagna fan and tested it and it seems quiter - but I never got around to installing it on my Radeon. I lucked out in buying an OEM GeForce3 and swapped it in my Cube before I had the chance to upgrade the Radeon fan. No regrets, but I'm keeping my Radeon in case I pick up a 2nd Cube .........joe
