Hey all,
OK, I've heard different opinions on this and wanted to see what people here thought. I'm considering a 7200 RPM internal hard drive for my Bondi iMac 233. iMac models usually have 5400 RPM drives, though a number of other iMac users have upgraded to 7200 drives. Macworld and a couple people I've talked to suggest keeping a 5400 RPM drive for fear of overheating, but I haven't heard of anybody having any problems.
Does anyone here have horror stories on their hard drives overheating their systems? Is it a serious problem, or are the people who say stick with a 5400 RPM drive being too cautious.
Thanks,
Jim

Go check the manufacturer's specs on the drives. I expect they're not that different.

Some common sense applied to the answer works for me:
Do you keep your iMac in a cubby where it can't get cold air in the bottom, or vent the hot air easily? Do you live in a hot area like Arizona, or the Sahara? Do you like your environment unseasonably warm, in the 90s (Farenheit) ?
If those are true, consider sticking with a 5400 drive.
In all other cases, where you keep your computing environ at a normal temp, don't live in the hottest place on earth, and use air conditioning when appropriate, go ahead and use the 7200 rpm drive.
Many of our iMac users in the forums have upgraded to the 7200 happily.

I live in central Georgia where the summer temps stay in the 90s with the occasional 100s. When I upgraded my Rev B last year, I was staying in an older house (built 1860s) sectioned into five apartments. The house had single pane windows, high ceilings, and little insulation...That led to one hot house in the summer!
Even with these conditions, My Rev B went from 55 -> 47 degrees Celsius after upgrading it with a G4 processor, double RAM, and a Western Digital 40.5G 7200RPM hard drive. I max-out the machine, and it ran cooler!

Concern about overheating is a bunch of hooey. No modern drive should put out more heat than your machine can handle, regardless of speed.

I upgraded to an IBM 40gb/7200 rpm drive in my Rev B last year with no problems. The guy who sold it to me said he did the same thing.

I have an original iMac
IBM 7200 rpm 30 gb hard drive in it.
Newer (RIP) 433 G4 upgrade in it.
This baby is on 24/7 and no problems.
On 24/7 for over a year, too.
Don't worry about the heat, its a non issue.
