okay, so i have the original imac dv se 400, and i still love it, but i would really like to swap out the internal DVD-ROM with a slot-loading CD-RW, a la the latest iMacs. should be as easy as when i swapped my 13 GB drive for a 40GB, but FINDING the drive is becoming a problem...
Anyone know which model Apple uses, or if there are alternative vendors? the slot-loading thing has got me stumped.
thanks for anyone's help.

Do a search, you'll likely find one. I have never bought anything from this company, but they appear to have everything. Even iMac shells! Albeit expensive shells...

well, i tried that site, but all they have is the exact same model that the imac uses (i.e. kinda expensive). i was hoping to find an alternate, cheaper brand slot-loading cd-rw... anyone else have any ideas?

Can you provide a link to the slot-loading CDRW? I've never seen one outside of an Apple product. I checked icni and didn't find one.
Also, Comie Joe, YGM.

I have been looking for slot loading CDRWs as well and can't seem to find anything either... I have concluded thats it is hopeless and apple must have build own drives, they simply could have used laptop sized CDRW components and build the loading mechanisms and enclosure around another companies availlible product... which leads me to think you hack a trayloading notebook CDRW into it but then again just get a firewire drive

Hey mr_ryeman, thanks for the link but I couldn't find any iMac shells on the site. Just how expensive are they and what colors do they have? I'm looking for a bondi blue to make an aquarium out of.

Yeah, but they only have strawberry or tangerine. I want Bondi Blue. Heck, I'll even settle for blueberry or lime.

I have bondi shells. How much are you willing to pay for one complete set of iMac plastics?

They DO use standard laptop parts. ICNI.com sells them.
the part number you need is 661-2424. ask them for it.

Check out http://www.microdocusa.com/specials.html they have slot load cdrw for 179 and slot load dvd for 119. Also, is you are looking to replace a damaged tray load cd drive they have those to for 89 or will repair the damaged for 69.
Hope this helps.
