What can I do? The bloody fan noise is starting to give me headaches!

Is it possible to get some form of convection cooling going? Dry ice?

Any success stories?

You could just try to replace the fan with a quieter one. They're standard sizes so you can pick one up at any PC store.

And the hard drive and cd-drive are both noisy. Replacement ones from a third party company are generally a lot quieter.
I know a guy from nantucket, and well lets just say the stories about him are greatly exaggerated.

I agree that the iMac 333MHz is a, well, rambunctious little machine.

I had to put a clear piece of tape over the CD-ROM's button to keep it from rattling like crazy when I had a CD in there

As for the fan, you should be able to replace it with any 80mm (8CM) PeeCee fan, although I'm not sure what kind of power cable (Molex or 3-pin mini) it uses.
