I have a lacie cdrw scsi external 12x. as some of you may know, the noise is amazingly loud. It sounds like a person blowing air through their teeth and their mouth half closed. It was intolerable for me in my quest for silence. to I opened up the case.

inside, there is the yamaha drive, a little powersupply, and a tiny quiet fan. I put the blue cover over it, and it became loud again. now, what are my options? is the cdrw able to go internal (unless heat issues)? I suppose i'll insulate the fan from the case and attempt to clear a better path for the air. should I find a better case for it? I mean it looks cool and is sharp (maning painful too), but its terribly noisy.

what do I do?

What kind of computer do you have, can you place the drive internally inside the computer instead of in this case?

I have a G4. I was thinking of replacing the dvd-rom with it, and putting the dvd-rom in another computer.

anyway, inside the case, there is a metal shield over the drive with a grating over the fan. I simply removed the grating, put a drop of oil in the fan, and now I hear a whisper. the fan is well mounted already.

p.s. the drive now works in OS X with SCSI Helper, and the iTunes 2.0.3 update.
