I recently acquired an iBook 500 MHz for an unbelieveable price. Its the model with the cdrom drive. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a DVD drive to put in this little puppy? I'd like to rip that laptop apart and replace the current cdrom, but I'm not sure where I could get a hold of a dvd drive that would work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well yesterday I took a CD rom drive from a dead Rev. A iMac and put it in my Pismo. I don't know too much about the CD drive in the iBook but assuming its standard ATAPI size (and not some super thin kind) you can get almost any optical drive in there. However what you might want to do first is take the thing apart and look at the maker of the drive. YOu probably want to buy a drive from the same company so that you can put the same bezel on it. Otherwise it will end up looking ugly, like the iMac CD drive currently sticking out the side of my pismo. Mine looks pretty gross because it was not possible to put the black bezel on the CD drive since the screw holes didn't line up. I also did a bad job of filing the iMac's bezel down to fit the PIsmo. I need to take pictures of this, too bad I have no camera.

laptop optical drives are much like hard drives where the interface and mounting points are the same even amongst different manufacturers.

the only issue is that bezels (faceplates) are not compatible between different manufacturers. However amongst the same brand, bezels are generally compatible.

Bezels and any parts for that matter for Apple laptops are a PITA to find. An Apple specialist cannot order the part as Apple has a policy of core exchange.

If your optical drive is made by Matshita (Panasonic) find a DVD-ROM or even combo drive That is made by Matshita.

Hey cuomo--what did you get yours for?

I bought mine off some idiot for $675 cash. 500Mhz/dual USB/256MB/10GB/DVD.
Almost perfect--squeaky joint (covered under warranty though). Nick
