Wouldn't it be funny to have a door ajar light that turns on (on the front of the computer) when you open the side door (G3 or G4), and it's on?
Make that better.. opening the door turns on a light inside (for easy viewing), and if the machine's on, a chime.
(open door)
Bing, Bing, Bing, Bing, Bing.

That would really be pretty easy, just a simply physical switch on teh door somewhere, just like the way your car does it really. The harder part would be mounting the LED somewhere cool, like behind the apple on teh front, so it would pulse when you did open it.

There's a tiny wee red LED on the near side of the Mobo that goes on when you open the case anyway, to let you know if there is power going through it. It is tiny though. I think the voltage will be way to small for a bigger lamp, and sound board.
If you just pieced together a small shielded battery powered unit and placed it in one of the Hard drive spaces that would work. You can get wee alarm kits from Maplin or Radio Shack ( the only "hack" would be the switch mounting), and if you put it together with a flashing LED scrolling text alert as well - woah, you'd be opening the case all the time!

I never thought this post would ever get down to it, and I'm going to get those parts this week, at least for the pinging sound.
What I want to do is find the part from a car dashboard that says Door Ajar, or maybe one of those mini scrolling LED panels like the ones in the Crown Victorias.
Imagine it... you open the case when the computer is on to be greeted by a pinging sound, and see Door Ajar pop up
I'm working on making a little box that gives your computer some funky things, such as bright lights, and a small cold cathode or florescent light that goes on when you open the door (even when the machine's off so the box probably has to be externally powered.
The system I'm working on with a friend, MIGHT just ever come out into the market, since I'm planning on giving it an elaborate alarm system, sweet features, and temperature sensoring
I'm trying to find a mini control panel, maybe I'll make a little external box that closely matches the G4 and has the lights needed, such as Bright lights (blue icon), Door ajar (orange icon), and of course, the damned seatbelt light just for the hell of it. rofl
Sure, it'd deem as practically useless, but a fun toy, imagine working ina design place where you really want to make your PC friends jealous, now all you have to do is open the case, or hit a button on the control box,
Besides, who gets an internal light system, or a sensor so if the door opens when the machine is on, you think it's a car. lol
It wouldn't be too bad, though the seatbelt light should be from a jet plane, since the G4 sounds like a damned jet at boot anyway. rofl
