I am planning on puting a new, larger and faster HD in my iMac. I have already decided to go with a 7200 rpm, eventhough some people may say that is a bad idea. I am after speed here. My question is should I go with the IBM Desktar 60GXP or the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X? I have heard mixed reviews that one is quieter than the other. I would like to have a quiet drive that I do not notice all the time. Is the Maxtor with FDB (fluid dynamic bearings) noticeably quieter than the standard Maxtor? Does anyone have any comments on these two drives, or any others for that matter. Thanks.

I don't know about the 60GXP series but the 75GXP series sucked. Mine died on me 4 months after I bought it. I tried to get it replaced but the model was discontinued. The place that I bought it from replaced my drive with an 80Gig Maxtor.
It's much more quieter than the IBM drive and waaay more quieter than the 13gig stock Maxtor that came with my iMac. The drive wakes up from sleep much faster too. But to be fair to IBM, I have heard that the 60GXP series is a more reliable product than the 75GXP series.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

I bought the 60GXP today and it has a totally annoying high sound
Obviously I don't know how reliable this thing is.

I will never again buy a harddrive before hearing it. If someone has a suggestion what I should be looking for, let me know.

I'll give it a week and if it doesn't get better I'll be using my 20 GB Fujitsu SilentDrive again. It's slower, smaller and old, but I couldn't hear it at all.
