Hello, upgraded a g4/400 to a Sonnet Dual 500 Card
this card uses the origional heat sink from the 400, plus a plate so the heat transfers from the second processor..

was running fractal carbon at the highest settings, let it run for about hour 1/2, check the temp of the cpu with powerlogic cache control, it said it was 48º C.

I felt the heatsink and it was Extremely hot, almost too hot to the tuch.

what temp sould a dual 500 run at? should it be hot to the tuch?

Id like to clock this to a dual 550 but i see the heat being a major problem...

thanks for any advice

I have that card in the exact same tower. Your temp reading dosen't sound like anything to reall worry about. The temp readings on thoes G4's are really inaccurate anyway. My cpu's always read about 15-20C diff between the two and I'm sure they are both making great contact.

About being to hot to touch the heatsink.. that's really odd.. I run Dnet almost 100% of the time and I've opened the case to feel the heatsink and it's never so hot I feel uncomfortable touching it.. warm to moderatly warm, but never "hot" Check your fans...

BTW.. I have never seen anyone talking about overclocking the Sonnet Duet.. can you, and if you know how do you?? Linkage.. I'd love to overclock mine..

hey... hmm its not skin burning hot, but id say very warm, seems almost normal though from what ive tested on the duals here at work.

overclocked mine to 550 on both and had some problems, then i did one to 500 and one to 600 and now it seems stable.

going to try adjusting the voltage to see if i can get both at 550 or 600 since the one at 600 seems stable, i did about a week of burn-in as suggested on xlr8yourmac (basically ran dnet non-stop to burn the cpu in) not sure if that will help, gonna try the dual 550 again tonight.

i got a fan and a short heatsink i think i can modify to fit over both cpus and still have clearance for the zip tray, that should keep the temp down, also adding a heatsink to each cache should keep them cool as well

btw, im runing teh caches at 5:1 on the 500/600 combination right now.

let you know what I find out.
fan/hs combo should be here tonight.

also my quicksilver case transplant is underway so ill post pics of that as well

anyone need a graphite g4 case?

well.. hearing from someone it could be done I felt the spark of needing to haxor my computer again.. I looked over the moto pdf and while I was looking at the xlr8yourmac article about overclocking an Apple Duel 500 the two areas where you adjust the multiplier looked really familiar... Before I installed the Sonnet Duet I was looking at the card wondering how to overclock it... I remember on the back of the card left side seeing a row of 8 solder points.. tow where used. Low and behold this is where you adjust the multiplier.. There’s 8 of them in a row.. they go 4,3,2,1...1,2,3,4 and there is a resister on both #2 spots.. HA.. I think I’ve got it figured out..

I yanked the card and brought it into work with me. I’m on my way down to the electronics shop to test my findings

hmm, let me know what you find out, because the resistors on mine seem to be in a different location?

one spot is in those 8 spots (the bottom 4 I believe), but then tere is another 4 between the center of the 2 processors

i tried taking a picture, but i cant get a clear shot that close, i think i need to scan it, but im moving in a week and my scanner i packed up, also i would need the card in to scan.. haha

ill try to bring it to work tomorrow

Dude! Your right.. I may have been getting a little to excited but after looking again it's the bottom 4 (of the 8 on the left side) and the 4 inbetween the cpus that controll ultiplyer!! Wow.. I wonder what I was about to change?!

So.. on the LEFT is R1-4, and in the middle of the card is R13,14,15,19.. these are the ones controll the multiplyer.. Right? I connected R2&3, R14&15.. this should give me 550mhz right.. I'm just wanting to make sure before I plug this thing in and blow it up..

I can't believe no one has pictures or a www site about overclocking this thing.. we should email xlr8yourmac or something have have them add a page..

you got it

i cant figure out were the (supposedly) 2 set of 8 resistors are for the volatge on each cpu? or does the one set control that? i think i see one set of 8... ill check the diagram, i think I need to up the voltage on it to run at 600 stable.

let me know how that 550 goes, you will probably need to set the cache lower (around 200 or 240 i think) because it cant keep up clocked that high.

trying to grab that card to scan now...

how do you lower the cache? I can't figure that one out.. I'm waiting for this guy to come back from lunch so I can use his scanner..

I use PowerLogix Cache Control
works great on this card

find it on versiontracker.com

I tryed using that cache controller and it would lock up with the Duet... The site even says "Any PowerMac with a G3 or G4 processor except dual processors or 7450 processors"

It worked fine with my single 450

Well.. I'm on my way home.. hope it works..

did you try cache control 2.1? fixed my lockups here.
going to try upping the voltage tonight as i cannot get a stable system at dua 550's

how did it workout for you?

SUCCESS! Got stable Dual 550MHz for about 4 hours now.
had to up the voltage to 2.4V... tried higher voltage for 600Mhz, very flaky.

Went from ~3200 to over 3880 in the fractal altivec test.
Close to my Dual 533 at work, and this is on a 100MHz bus !!!

here is the scan/info:
CPU settings the two left boxes(4 each) Voltage the Right Box (5 spots)

<img src="http://tchomeshow.com/mike/sonnet500dp.jpg" alt=" - " />
<img src="http://tchomeshow.com/mike/voltage.jpg" alt=" - " />

The Settings for the CPU speed are as follows:
1011 = 500MHz
1001 = 550MHz
1101 = 600MHz
0101 = 650MHz

Great speed bump even at the 50MHz boost on each.

Well mine is now running at 550 stock voltage.. I'll have to do some more testing to make sure it'l 100% stable. I'd be willing to bet we're about the only 2 people running an overclocked Sonnet Duet right now.

This was a really easy overclock, just add 2 solder bridges and your done.

I had my processor scanned but left the images on my computer at work. I'll post them monday I guess.
Think I shoudl try for 600 no! I think I'll just leave it alone for now.

We'll it's not 100% stable at 550 with stock voltage... I'm debating if I should up the voltage or just put it back to 500... is there a stting for 2.2 or 2.3 volts? I'd feel better with a small bump.

let me look for the settings, ive been 100% here at 550 with the 2.3V
i had to downclock the cache to 220 (5:2) instead of the 270 normal setting.

I bet your right, i havent seen any info on the Duet overclock....

Did you say your running your voltage at 2.3v or did you meen 2.4v? The first one you have listed abou toltage tweaks is 2.4.

<a href="http://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/cs5165rev2.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/cs5165rev2.pdf</a>

Is this where you got your voltage charts from?

It looks like 2.2v should be easy, simply move Vid0 to Vid1 (11110) to(11101)

I'd really like to keep the V as low as needed. My Duet wasen't stable at 550 with stock voltage and I diden't have the equipment to change it at home. This gave me a good reason to put my Cube back together. It used to have the Duet but I was feeling very space limited so I got a tower..

Any way, do you know anyone who'd be intrested in a Cube? I's got a nice fresh install of 9.2.2 and is ready to roll!

Bart

Edit.. heck.. 2.3v is even better.. just connect Vid1 (11100) I think I'll do that.. I bring the chip to work Tuesday and have the bridge added.

I really hate to get rid of it.. it's just so cool looking.. but cash is getting tight and with my tower setup I really never use it any more

It's a 450,DVD,Rage128pro, 128mb ram... btw.. they never made a 400.. only 450 and 500.

And I just took the fan out of it.. darn.. I'm sure with that fan it would have overclocked to 500. I have a GeForce2MX in my tower that is from a PC.. I flashed it and it works great.. so for about $35 you can get a video card that'll do QE...

I don't know.. make me an offer.. I was just going to ebay it..
