has anyone replaced the DVD-ROM in a slot-load iMac with a combo drive used in the latest iMac G3 models? also, what combo drive make/model is in the latest iMacs? i'm guessing that if i could get my hands on one of those, i could probably just swap the older DVD-ROM slot-load for a newer combo slot-load, right?

if anyone has done this, or has any info, please chime in

thanks,

tr

I have an iMac DV that originally came with a dvd-rom slot loading drive. I really didn't see much point in the dvd-rom drive on a computer with a 15" monitor so i bought a 4x/8x/24x CD-RW from microdocusa.com (actually i got it from e-bay but the seller had originally purchased it from them) and replaced the dvd drive with the CD-RW. It was quite easy, the iMac is self-explanitory when it comes to opening the case and the slot loading drive is easy to spot. Not difficult at all, and i use the CD-RW almost every day and it works perfect.

I would really like to replace the CD-RW with a slot loading combo drive, the only hard part is finding a place to purchase the combo drive. If you find a place that sells them i would appreciate it if you could let me know. And i'll do the same if i find a place.

just looked at that website -- they must be out of stock on the CDR drives, because they only list CD and DVD drives.

I'm interested in getting a combo drive myself -- but I would settle for a CDR.

Also, does anyone have any idea about replacing the CD drive in a clamshell iBook with a CDR or combo drive? I was thinking about getting a generic notebook drive and swapping faceplates with it, but I don't want to attempt it without at least hearing from someone else who's done this or at least tried to do this

Hey Guys.......Try here !

<a href="http://excalibur.icni.com/icni/dept.asp?page=1&dept_id=2021&mscssid=H6JG6 QP0FLS92JDK0G0R5AQNSLFQ3QM2" target="_blank">http://excalibur.icni.com/icni/dept.asp?page=1&dept_id=2021&mscssid=H6JG6 QP0FLS92JDK0G0R5AQNSLFQ3QM2</a>

I have bought from them before.

I believe the combo drive slot load DVD/CDRW was $139 previously used.

Don't quote me though.

i want to upgrade my 8x4x32 burner to a 24x burner or faster. Is there a slot load available at that speed? If so, where can I get it?
