I recently got a Mac Classic and Mac Classic II from the school. The II doesn't work-a checkered screen appears at startup. (anyone know what's wrong?) The Classic works perfectly. I swapped motherboards-Classic II-Classic, got the same checked screen, so the motherboard is the problem. The hard drive is perfectly functional. I swapped that into a 6116.

Anyway. I've painted the II a nice orange color, along with the mouse and keyboard-I just don't know what else to do. I'll probably put in this dilbert thing I have. I've already made one MacQuarium out of an SE. It's now black w/ gold apple logo and red lighting underneith.

The Classic. Don't know what to do. I figured I'd paint it a nice bright green color. But what else? It's running 7.1 w/ 4 megs of RAM. Could I somehow make it an mp3 player (almost portable!)? Is there an mp3 app that would run on it? I have a 7100 (our family's comp) that no one uses, I could swap hard drive & get 750 megs of hard drive space.

Suggestions?

I dunno... I tried loading soundapp on my Classic but it wouldn't play mp3's... I'd be suprised if you are able to find one that can. Also, my classic only has a 20mb hard drive -- not too many songs going to go on there but I supposed it can be upgraded.

NO mp3 player will run on the ancient processor and slow bus speed of that machine. Now the really cool mod would be to put the motherboard and guts of a G4 cube into it and replace the display with an LCD screen.

Now THAT would be a cool mod for an MP3 player sitting in your living room. BTW, I've seen instructions for how to do this online, but don't recall the link off-hand.

On AppleFritter.com someone put a G4 cube inside of a color classic, using that monitor. But I don't really have that kind of cash.

you could go complete opposite ans turn the dead one in to a portable Atari gaming system, or anything that can take a composite input.

so you mean I could use the monitor like a TV? (I kinda already threw it out (snuck it in the trash)). But I do have a monitor from a Mac SE. Would that do it?

yeah, take the guts out of a 2600, they are quite small and make a cartrage slot in the front. there is a site that tells how to convert the input into a composite input. do a search on portable 2600

The checkerd screen just means that you have to replace the battery.

I am now considering putting a powerbook's innards inside. Would a PB 520 (50mhz 68040) run any sort of mp3 player?

I doubt it, even low power PPC's have trouble. I'd try perhaps a 1400's guts, or maybe a 3500, if you can find one .
