I want to replace the Internal 60GB 5400RPM HD to a 120GB 7200RPM HD & the factory installed 256MB SDRAM to 512MB SDRAM (non-user accessible slot) in my iMac FP 800MHZ. I would like to know of others who have done this and what size, speed and brand of HD. Also any good places to pick up 512MB SDRAM 168 pin for a decent price. I'm going to have an authorized service tech install but just want to purchase on my own. I don't want to buy something that won't work.

Also just to let you know getting them drives out a harder then you may think, almost everything has to come out (i.e. bottem case, Optical drive, and brackets)

so have fun, if you dare...

You are absolutely right, that's why I'm having a Apple Service Tech do it at the same time I'm having the internal Ram switched out for a 512 module. The reason: I want the space and the 7200RPM speed.

And if you replace the internal memory module with non-Apple memory, you will not be able to use AppleCare in case of problems as they will not troubleshoot any system with non-Apple memory installed. Make sure they install Apple memory and don't touch the hard drive.

Of course it's your decision but now you know some of the potential pitfalls.

Good luck.

I don't care how good or bad Apple memory is, it's not a good idea to buy it from them because they jack you price-wise. You know how much they charge?
64 MB - $40
128 MB - $75
256 MB - $150
512 MB - $400

Current prices are somewhere around $15, $30, $50 and $100 for those four sizes. Apple charges 2-4 times more.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*
