My iBook (Dual USB Rev A) combo drive died the other day after I had to reset the computer following a crash instigated by a corrupted DVD-ROM. Basically I've surmised that it's not a software issue because booting in OS 9 doesn't help. I've reset the PRAM, done a full reset, tried all sorts of discs (including the Apple Hardware test CD), etc.
Basically what happens is that when I put in a CD, the computer acts as if the drive were empty (no spin-up). I tried fiddling a little with the laser mechanism (sliding it back and forth) and all that happens is that when I close the drive, the mechanism makes a funny noise and goes back to its original position. I figure the problem lies in the CD detection function. Can anyone help enlighten me on how to help my iBook recognize when there's a disc in the drive??
BTW, the iBook is out of warranty or I would have already sent it to Apple.
Thanks a million,
alison
P.S. My apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question.
