I want to make my powerbook the most original, one-of-a-kind laptop out there. I want people to look at it and say "hey i would sell my kids to nike, to have one of those". any ideas?

Everyone does that "silver" thing. It looks cool. But it wouldn't be too original. Any other colours that might look good? Anything I could do with the glowing Apple in the centre?

Someone made the apple glow red with LEDs mounted behind it.

I would make i with the new HIGH intensity Blue LEDs.
We just got them at work, and they're DAMN bright!

Ooh, i remember someone making their Apple the original rainbow scheme.

He took a thin piece of transparency paper, got some permenant markers, and drew lines of the sequence of colors in the Apple.

He then cracked his case open (the display), and taped the transparency behind the Apple, so when the display was on, the reflected the colors through..

Then again, remember this voids your warranty.

Is there a such thing as a replacement keyboard for powerbooks (different colors)?

on the lombards, you can replace the keyboard with an iMac keyboard for a "steinway" look....

I think you can replace the keyboard with an iBook keyboard, which is transparent-y so it wold be easy to color it

An iBook keyboard will work fine with either Lombard or Pismo.

There have been some keyboardm mods for Wallstreet, but I haven't seen any for Lombard/Pismo. This one Japanse site had replcaement F and J keys. They were solid gold with a diamond in the middle for the bump in those two keys. Pricey as hell (I think upwards for $1000) and it looked kind of ghetto, but very unique.

With regards to painting PowerBooks, go to <http://www.applefritter.com/>. There are several painted PowerBooks exhibited here.

bizarre:

Your innovation in the lighting of your PowerBook can call down airplanes. Man, with that thing, you can direct traffic...!!!

Anyway, I will consider hacking my PowerBook after the warranty expires. How do you open the casing per se of the PowerBook? That is, behind the screen?

Did you have your Mac today?

There is something sold at hobby stores called MonoCoat. In hopes of doing a simlar project to the one you cite above, i picked some up. Horrible stuff. Doesn't stick to anything even after a hot iron and a blowdryer. I am really curious as to what material the original Silver G3 used.

I am beginning to think that i might have to resort to stick-on sheets. Ugh!

Monocoat is PREMIUM stuff man. But you dont want that. Go to a sign shop, and order adhesive vinyl. Whatever color you want. It wont cost much either. Just use a blowdryer when applying, and it will conform to any shape, plus it looks like paint. When you take it off there is almost NO residue either. In order to make it look ince, you'd have to dissassemble your powerbook to apply it and wrap it around teh edges.

Ca$h...

Thanks a million man. I was blow-drying, ironing, and smoothing out that f&$*ing Mono-crap for nearly 2 hours last night to no avail. Sticks great to itself, not much else. So much of listening to the guys at the hobby shops. Adhesive vinyl sounds like just what i am looking for. I've already taken the Book apart several times now, so that's not a problem. So you can just go into any sign shop and ask for it by name eh? Shweet. Putting the gas in the car already...

Woo hoo! Just finished tricking out the Wallstreet today (thanx Ca$h and res-evil) Think: chrome metal mirror finish and glowing white Apple over classic black side panels. Will probably add in minor highlights of chrome in various parts of the books next. This is what the Books should look like out of the factories.

One pleased PB owner

I just made my pismo silver this week. It looks so good! I also silverized my expansion bay devices, so it looks even better. If I had a camera I would post pictures. I used the real deal "dynocal" stuff, or whatever it is. I got it from Japan, and I've got plenty left over to do at least 2 more powerbooks. Anybody want some? Email me waffffffle@aol.com

I think this would look cool, so would the armour.
but, i think the outside of the case should be trimmed in leather. Just to make extra special.

WOA!H Leather would be SO nice. Might make it overheat though, because it'd insulate it.

so maybe add extra venting to keep it cool?
if anyone out there has a copy of the AppleDesign book checkout pages 196-197, the nautilus prototype is trimmed in leather and/or brushed metal and look very classy.
i'll post pics later...

(edit - missed the "t" out of extra, so i'm a fool)
